Title: Can my car run E10 Uk Fuel change
Post by: Jayko on August 12, 2021, 01:43:57 pm
In the UK from September 1st petrol pumps will be using E10 fuel. I have a Golf GTI mk5 reg plate 2006. Will my car be okay to use E10? And if not what can I do?

It’s only 95 unleaded that’s going E10, which you shouldn’t really be using in a GTI anyway. SuperUnleaded will remain at E5.

Not sure about the e5 and E10 (my very uneducated knowledge thinks it only really affects old cars with a metal fuel tank)

As for super/not super unleaded. I've gone through phases of using solely super, a mix of 95 and super, and currently solely Sainsbury's 95. I've never noticed a difference in how it drives or the economy. I'm sure you will get an extra 10hp or so using super but unless you're hiring the limiter on every change you won't notice it. People say they feel a difference but I honestly think it's a placebo effect.

And then there's the price difference - Sainsbury's 95 is at least £10 a tank cheaper than Shell 99 at the minute. I fill up once a week so that's over £500 a year difference.

Golf GTI's are fine on E10 per the above link apart from a very small window : "Golf mark 5 2.0 litre (110 kW) FSI made from January 2004 to May 2004"

We also only use standard fuel in our GTI.

The hooha surrounding ethanol is it rots rubber and untreated aluminium.....but that's only the case with E85 and pure ethanol (E100).  5 or 10% dilution in petrol won't do any harm to anything.  Long term fuel trims might go up a little bit with E10 as ethanol has way less potency than petrol.  10% is as far as you can without needing bigger injectors, so I doubt we will ever see E15 or E20.

Apart from the rubber hose feeding the low pressure fuel rail, everything in the fuel circuit is plastic, so that isn't a concern.

As for 95 vs 98,99 - if you look on the petrol cap, it says 98/95 Super Unleaded. Above '95' is a 'refer to handbook' graphic.  What the handbook will say is, you may noticed reduced performance running 95....but what that REALLY means is, the chance of detonation is far greater.  95 works on a standard car, but won't make the same power as it would on 99 RON.  Remaps almost certainly always need 99RON.

Yeah I agree Ive tried the super unleaded and noticed no difference too, I just go for the cheap stuff and it does the job lol.

thank you @Pudding (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10733) that has assured me alot more that my car is good to use the new fuel, I will be sticking to normal unleaded when the fuel changes.

My bad, I assumed the 'FSI' was a different Golf model, did not know that was a type of GTI engine  :ashamed:

No problem. Does this mean my reg 2006 GTI will be alright?

It sounds like it based on only 2004 models being at risk  :happy2:
