Title: Rear wheel bearing and hub size?
Post by: DBXdarkangel on August 15, 2021, 06:25:55 pm
Getting a noise and a metallic rattle from NSR Wheel and can see black brake dust real bad on the wheel so thinking to replace the rear discs and pads (although they still look to have loads of meat on them).. or the wheen hub n bearings as I'm getting some rumble noises at speed.

Problem is eurocarparts shows 2 different sizes?

The best you can do is have a VW part center run your VIN and tell you which size it is. There was a build date change over from 30mm to 32mm as I understand it...with most being 30mm. If VW can't tell you which fits yours...then you may need to measure it upon removal. Which means, depending on your transportation needs, you may need to buy both sizes and return the one not needed. This one shown in the pic was fitted with a 30mm hub.

Thanks for the reply. I've bought a caliper Micrometer so will email vw first then if they don't know I will measure it. I have 2 cars so should be OK to measure it first.

Thanks man

Buy both and return the unused one. That's what I did, can't remember what size was used though!

If it's any use mine was replaced with https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164726421783 which is 30mm and a 2005 car. Ended up getting both done, parts bought myself as the garage local to my office are good and don't charge the earth. Another "specialist" couldn't even tell there was an issue with a hub despite me telling him and it being fecking obvious if you went above 50mph.

Mine is an early 2007 and I replaced one years ago. But I bought two and held on to one just for when it was truly needed. I still have the other, and I assumed the one I needed to replace so soon was due to having hit a bump on the left side when I ran off the road in 2011. I could measure the spare but given they did make a change, I wouldn't want to misdirect or mislead you. I wasn't even aware when I got mine that there was a change and still do not know for sure when the change took place.

I emailed vw with my reg number and they said they didn't know and would have to inspect it.
My caliper Micrometer turned up so I could just whip the wheel off and measure the inside of the hub before buying. I'm tempted to buy a 30mm and it seems that's the normal.

You will need to take the bolt out to be able to measure the bore size - so prepare to channel your inner He-man / Hulk to undo and tighten it back up
-or-
A more extreme option is swapping to scirocco alloy knuckles...they only have one size

I did the same as @Lewo (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14490) both from a seller on eBay after asking him which size I needed as he agreed I could return the unused ones for a full refund. Mine was 30mm on an '05 plate. I was told the only way to tell is to remove the old one and offer up one.
