Title: GVKs Scirocco GT TDi
Post by: GVK on October 03, 2021, 06:39:58 am
Picked up this yesterday, from Nottingham 140ps GT TDI NAV with DCC.... 61 mpg on return journey home.

Had a boost leak from where new turbo fitted, turbo muffler seal was missing!

Has a dent on bonnet, no AC and the locking wheel nut key is missing. Other than that it's a nice car to drive. Will remap, and lower it on H&R or Eibach springs. Have coded out the ESP/ASR function so 5 sec press turns everything off as per BMW. Coded the RNS510 to allow NAV functions up to 60 km/h, and messed about with some of the lighting functions. Used OBD eleven pro.

Nice handling car for stock, pity it has budget sh*te tyres on 235/40x18 - will get some new ones on the front at least AsAP.

Nice car - good colour,
Bonnet dent can't be that bad - it isnt noticable in the pictures.

Missing locking key is a pain.
I had the key for my old Mk4, but through use it decided it didn't want to be a key any more...
Invested in 2 or 3 types of removers, I had managed to get 3 of the bolts of myself, the last one refused to come off.
After visited several tyre places & even called the RAC, I ended up going to an Estonian dude who apparently was ex-special forces, he charged in advance and got out the biggest snap-on impact gun I have seen + bolt extractor - only 2 minutes later it was off and I was £50 lighter.

IIRC - the best type is a giant version of the Irwin bolt removers like below, seems to be some chinese versions on ebay:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.snapon.com%2FR_RRD%2FObjects_lg%2Fimages%2FLSR2500PLUS.jpg&hash=1e2796e2de13191f3a25cdf6d5e40722af64033a)
But what tool you can use will be dictated by space in the wheel around the bolt.
If that was my Mk5 with Monzas, I would have been completely f'd - too deep and no space, leaving no option but drilling the bolt out.

I know a guy who works at VW to get a master key set... Should be easy, if not a job for local tyre shop as it needs front tyres as got budget crap on it -  :fighting2:
Dent is slap bang in the middle of bonnet, looks like somethings dropped on it.  :jumping:

Part number required for the shifter linkage for an S3/Edition 30 - this has got too much throw on the gear shifter. :driver:

Nice one, getting stuck in already I see  :happy2:

What remap are you thinking of getting?

Cheers for the S3 shifter p/n.  I might sling that onto the MK6, although to be fair, the shift didn't feel any different to mine on the test drive.

Anyway, what's next? ARBs? Brakes? etc.

Next on the list is -- Super pro rear 24mm adjustable ARB, Super pro front ball joints & the same EBC orange stuff pads I had in the Edition 30. My mate is an agent for a company up North who do maps I forget their name but he can do me a file for 'cheap' 177bhp/395nm.Mates rates and all that.
Found it - http://www.bhp-uk.net

I really want a set of 8x18 Speedline turinis on it, think they look the nuts in Anthracite, but they're £1100 without tyres!!!!

So might just get a cheap set of BBS Pescara 'style' wheels, the classic Y spoke design, seen some on Wheelbase's site

As the car has DCC it has a level sensor on each suspension arm, one is broken on mine NSF, asked for a quote from VW............................£170 EACH!! :signLOL: Can get non-genuine for £30 on line, might just araldite it together or something....

VW love to tax their sensors - I replaced my rear level sensor for light leveling with an aftermarket one  - its been fine.
Suspect someone had dropped the arm and hadn't undone the level.

Looking good in very little time - how is it driving now after initial fixes?

I might get a non gen then if ok.

Going really well, love driving it!

Handles so well due to the wide track

Looking good, great colour.

Those wheels look great  :happy2:  Love the Turinis as well, very OEM looking, but gone up a lot in price  :surprised:

180ish bhp is pretty good and should hopefully liven up the bottom end a bit as well.  They're a bit flat down low.  Did a scan on the MK6, Flash count = 1   No way it's performance mapped though, too slow.  Hopefully just a dealer update.  I wonder what the difference is between 140 and 170 GTD? Boost pressure?  Bigger turbo?

Glad you're enjoying it.  So much easier to drive in traffic.  Just lift your foot off the clutch.  The slow idle speed and lack of torque in the ED30 can't do that

God we're getting old getting excited by a diesel

140 is same hardware as 170 just different software and EGT sensor, have been reading up on it.

I know mate we must be getting old, well I'm 50 in January!

Mine has flash count 2 guess dealer updates...

edit - 170 has different turbo.

Title: Re: GVKs Scirocco GT TDi
Post by: GVK on October 14, 2021, 08:30:00 pm
Its not what you know but who.

Went into local VW dealer stores today, guy I used to work with runs it. Asked him how much the genuine VW 0w30 LONG LIFE 3 oil is for the Scirocco (Cant put any old crap in it, has DPF) "Well Gary, it should be £60 but you can have it for £30"

Result!!

So gave car oil, fuel and pollen filter service using all genuine parts , pollen filter was black! I put an air filter element in when we fixed the turbo muffler leak.

Nice price!

Shouldn't take a lot to boost up a 140 to 170 then.  A new VAG indie has opened up near me recently so I'll ask if he has a VW ODIS machine and he can sling the probe and software onto it.  Should only be an hour's labour and the part.  Way cheaper than a £300-£500 remap!

Yeah I was wondering about the DPF and whether our 09 plate has one.  Does it not need Ad blu? Or did that come later?  I know diddly squat about diesels

I noticed the other day the TDI pulls the same 80mph @ 3000rpm as the ED30.  I thought diesel gearing would be taller!
Title: Re: GVKs Scirocco GT TDi
Post by: GVK on October 15, 2021, 09:02:44 am
No ad blue on the earlier DPF vehicles mate.

I got the info on the 140-170 off TDI CLUB forum, will find a link and post up here.

Ahh, I posted previously that the 140-170 was same hardware, looks like the 170 has bigger turbo too....

"The cheapest and easiest way to tune a CBDB engine is to flash the original .sgo flash from the CBBB engine (GTD - 170hp).

You need to change the EGT-sensor from 03L906088JG to 03L906088BS. The CBDB Sensor will not work (different resistance).

Flash the ECU to 03L906022LC.

Then you can tune the 022LC (CBBB) File, but i recommend to change the Turbo to the bigger CBBB Turbo.
CBBB Turbo: 03L253056C.

You will get over 200hp with that Turbo and ECU Type. Why i know that? because i did it that way in the past ;)
You dont need to change the clutch, i used the stock CBDB clutch with 215hp and 420nm torque. (Its the same clutch like on the CBBB engine)"

Does it? That sounds about right!  I was looking at the tacho from the passenger side but next time I drive it, I'll check and confirm.  I did think the gearing was a bit short for a diesel

Title: Re: GVKs Scirocco GT TDi
Post by: pudding on October 27, 2021, 01:34:30 pm
Yeah our MK6 does 80mph at 2K as well.

Been talked out of a remap by my local VAG specialist.  He sees too many clogged DPFs and knackered fuel pumps/injectors from remaps, but obviously a mapper will keep quiet about that.

I might just bolt on all the GTD hardware instead and flash it accordingly, which he agreed would be the better solution.

Clutch out noise stops, press clutch RATTLY NOISE starts until pressing clutch all the way stops noise. In my mind it's DMF but generally DMF noises are with clutch out and stop with clutch depressed.

With clutch halfway pressed it's LOUD!

What do you think?

Ah sorry mate, I misread that as DPF

I must admit, I sometimes pull away in second as well.  It doesn't seem to mind it though

I need to get one of those "clutch to start" bypass looms as I hate cranking with no oil pressure on the thrust bearing.

I've held back on doing the remap, I don't really want to fork out for injectors and fuel pump ideally.

No, same mate.  TBH the 140 feels pretty brisk anyway to be fair.  I've been reading up on it and some folk say remapping the 140 to 170 makes for a punchier engine than the factory 170 as its less laggy.

Good news on the pass though  :happy2:

Done anything fruity with it yet?  Our MK6 is still standard   I looked into it and the faff wasn't worth it tbh and too many comments about remaps causing frequent DPF regens.  Not in for that nonsense.

2009 Scirocco 2.0 TDI once in a blue moon I get a beep and ESP fault on centre dash. Only does it on initial start up over night like I say very random. No ESP/ABS lights stay on when it does it. No fault codes (checked on VCDS and OBD eleven. Weird one. Any ideas?
Title: Re: GVKs Scirocco GT TDi

Gave the Scirocco a bit of a service today. Oil & filter, fuel filter, front pads, aux. drive belt as I've seen what a mess they can do if they fail and go inside the cam belt cover. The Starline front anti roll bar links I fitted last year are both shot so bought a couple from local motor factors and lobbed them on , I say that but we had to cut the top nuts off again with a grinder!

Had a remap from M17 performance recently, up to 180bhp/400nm. Goes well but I think it may have had an ecomap on before judging by the flash counts.

So,went to Cadwell park on Sunday to watch the racing, it was a wash out and car parks were water logged! When I went to leave got stuck on the wet grass and tried turning ESP off to help traction. No beuno! No matter what I did with the button it wouldn't turn off.

Had a look on eBay for a button and it was a minefield, from a Chineseum special for £8.95 to  Lithuanian seller advertising them for over £60! So I went to local VW dealer Crowsons of Spalding and got a genuine VW one for £35. The design has been replaced to one with a skidding car rather than the ESP OFF text, replaced in 2011.

Got a few bits to do on the annual service on the car. Had advisories on the MOT for rear pads low, and os inner CV gaiter deteriorated. Also advisories for 3 tyres. Had a set of Falken FK520 fitted.
Going to fit rear discs as old ones are lipped and corroded.
Gone for cheapy Apec (£45 for discs and pads!) . Got a ball joints kit for when fitting the driveshaft gaiter as the 3 studs have a habit of snapping.

Our MK6 TDI also had an MOT advisory on a failing CV boot, and one of the console bushes has gone.  Luckily I kept a load of parts back from my ED30, so had all that and more in stock ready to go on   Still going like a trooper that thing  :happy2:  Very reliable and fun car.

Been and seen my mate who's Dad's got a ramp today to get the above bits fitted, everything went ok apart from one of the rear calipers was tight to wind in.

Left there and no sooner got to 20mph or so and the ABS/TCS lights came on. Went back and had a look on OBDeleven and the left rear ABS sensor showing mechanical malfunction. We wipped the rear disc off and could see the ABS ring part of it flapping about. Rear hub needed! Bloody cars.   :fighting2:

We had to undo the disc screw with hammer and punch so I think a bit of rust off the back of the disc has got in the gap of the rear hub and caused the failure on the ABS ring....

Having issues on hot days with seat belt warning going off even with seat belt connected.

Must be a micro-switch in the buckle playing up? Just had a quick look on VCDS adaptions to disable it - Only options were variant 1 to Variant 4. It was on 2 changed it to 3 as 1 and 4 had an error message.

If that hasn't solved it I have seen some You Tube vids about changing the coding. Coding scares me , don't want to f##k it up.

Sorted it by using OBDelelven, the long coding is easier to understand on there than VCDS  - literally an on/off menu!

Had a long running issue where car would randomly go into limp mode with glo plug light flashing and eventually depending on how many re-starts the engine light would appear.

Code read showed P2564 turbo position sensor fault - this is part of the actuator on the turbo and from VW was £250 for replacement actuator, it has to be calibrated on diagnostics to a certain voltage level which I couldn't find any concrete info how to do and asking around friends no one wanted to tackle it.

Obviously garages won't often install or warrant jobs with customer's supplied parts. Eventually found a VAG specialist in March, Cambs. who were happy to fit it, but understandably won't /can't warranty it.

So left it with them today and got a phone call confirming that is the fault and the actuator was giving out incorrect voltages, so they're fitting the actuator and calibrating it, carrying out basic settings tomorrow.  Fingers crossed it's sorted as was a pain with having to restart it numerous times so it was out of limp mode, doing about 50mph flat out!

Car was picked up this afternoon after being repaired, they've given it a much needed clean inside and out to so was impressed by that.
Cost was £251.70 to diagnose, and fit my supplied actuator including setting up actuator on VCDS and carrying out basic settings as per ELSA.

Another year another MOT , passed but with advisories for front tyres worn on inner edges both sides - tracking needs doing.

After MOT advisories on front tyres wearing on inner edges - Had 4 wheel alignment done today, apparently it was 'miles out'  - I know the steering wheel is straighter than it was but if I was really picky it's off to the other side now :D

Didn't get a print out to geek out over the values.
