Hi all,
This has happened on a few occasions now, just wondering what it's trying to tell me :signLOL:

The lights stay on fir a little bit and then go off?
-
Mine has been doing that since tweaking the wiring to the ABS sensor - I was pulling myself up from under the engine, grabbed onto what I thought was the caliper but missed, pulling on the cable.
It was coming up all the time, but seems to have settled itself down - last time it came up was a month ago from wheel spinning/axle hop.
-
Hmmm
Last thing I remember doing was using the jetwash at work to clean my wheels. I'll see how it goes for now and hope they don't stay longer
-
Thanks for the reply BTW 👍

We had exactly that set of lights, turned out to be the battery was past its best. Replaced it and it’s cleared the issue

My post from another thread…
Replaced the battery, it still had the original !
We had been getting frequent dashboard lights at startup (PowerSteering, ESP, Tyre Pressure) that would go away after a few minutes. Had it checked but no fault codes, mentioned that the electric windows were a bit slow to respond and he also noticed the ignition sounded sightly laboured, checked under the hood and advised that it was worth changing the battery as that could be the source of the issues.
Stuck with Varta as the original had been so good, got a slightly higher spec replacement for £81 delivered.

^^^ thanks for that matey :happy2:
i'll keep a close eye on things, cold weather is around the corner so i'd rather replace it sooner rather than later..
-
just a quick update.. the lights are constantly on now :scared:, but ive got no other issues like longer cranking or windows slowing down etc ? and no faults logged
-
You will not know the exact cause until you get it scanned, but it is likely to be either a wheel bearing or abs sensor fault.

As I mentioned above, we didn’t have any fault codes either. The other two symptoms were almost imperceptible, the window button would be deactivated for maybe a couple of seconds after ignition but after that would work like normal.
That may not happen with yours , but it’s worth checking the battery age, if it’s old/the original then it’s worth changing as it’s fairly low cost and it fixed it for us…was pretty relieved the mechanic spotted it as I couldn’t find anything from Googling the issue.

Thanks for the replies guys... I'll look into getting it sorted asap
-
well chaps !!! ive been driving the car with them dash lights on for a few days and thought nothing much of it.. i had 4 days off and must have used the car once.. woke up for work this morning and....... car is dead , even the doors wouldnt open with the fob.. so it looks like i have to buy a new battery today :fighting:
-
If only someone had posted a solution

Hope you get it sorted

Lol mate.. thanks for all the input.. i'll be leaving work early today, straight to Euro's for a new battery. if all the warning lights go off after the new battery then thats a bonus, if not.... i'll get her booked in for a scan and new sensors/wheel bearings.. :happy2:
-
Interesting - before getting replacement just check the voltage on the old battery, should be around 12.5v.
Mine would play dead with a brand new battery, sometimes completely dead, other times it would pop the doors but then not start - acted like a dead battery, it would even loose window memory - disconnecting and reconnecting the battery would usually bring it back to life.
Eventually found it was terminal 15 relay under the steering column gone bad, I have not had any issues since.
-
ohhh !! that is interesting, unfortunately i dont have any means of measuring the battery voltage :sad1:, so i might just pop home 1st and disconnect the battery and connect back again to see if anything happens, i'll also check that relay :happy2:

useful info for me to go on.. cheers fella :happy2:
is that relay easy to find under the steering column?
-
is that relay easy to find under the steering column?
Easy to find, but awkward to remove - you can see it, it just doesn't have space to remove it, you need to un-hook the assembly - Edit: you need to remove the panels under the steering wheel and IIRC another panel underneath.
This Golf Wagen vid calls it clamp 15 - Bottom Right 460 relay:
-
So I couldn't make it before closing time for a new battery, bit I've managed to attach jump leads to it and the car is dead!!!! Nothing, no Interior lights no nothing?
Could that relay cause this?
-
And where could a get 1 of these relays please
-
Quick update.... I tried jumping jer again and she started
Time for a new battery me thinks
-
so i jump started her around 9:30pm last night and when for a 2min drive and let her idle for 10mins... ABS, ESP, TPMS are still lit up but i also have the yellow steering wheel to join them now!!
anyways, she started 1st time in the morning and i drove to work, battery voltage was 14.3 on my drive in and 13 on idle.
im surprised it held charge overnight and started this morning, and it looks like the battery is being charged,
LC5F.... you got me thinking about that relay now  :signLOL:
do Euro's sell them? and if the battery is charging, why all the lights on the dash? or could it be that a abs sensor is actually out and now a have a relay problem too? :signLOL:
i suppose i have to find someone with a scanner
-
You need to check the voltage with engine off - the good news is 14.7v is healthy alternator.
I got mine from TPS IIRC it was the usual VW expensiveness of around £40 - there is the same relay on the other side of the panel, you could swap them over to see if there is any improvement - but check the voltage first before diving under the dash.

I really appreciate your time with this matey... :happy2: thank you..
i used the car info page on my android stereo which showed the battery voltage at 12.5v (this was after i jumped her last night and let it idle for 10mins or so... i switched engine off and it showed a stable 12.5v)
-
No problem - That sounds healthy, but try it again first thing in the morning, something may be draining it overnight.
Could it be the android head draining the battery?
-
Hmmm !! not sure about the headunit. it seems to power off completely when i take key out of ignition.
but... ive had the car scanned today and mechanic said its my rear left sensor that comes up with error!.. so i'll take it to him on friday and he will check the condition of the sensor and try to verify if it might be worth changing the wheel bearing too. :happy2:.... i might even change the battery while im at it

Heres a guide to check if your radio is draining:
If it is draining - you can change how it its powered with a jumper in the engine bay fuse box - the only problem is the startup wont be as quick:

might sound silly, but i dont have a multi meter :stupid:.. can i do the same check with a 12v tester? so stereo off and check for a live on both pins of that fuse?
-
unsure what a 12v tester is??
if it shows how many volts are flowing between terminals - then yes.
-
I mean a 12v light tester.. the light comes on if there is a live
-
If the head is draining the battery it is a very low voltage - you can try, but suspect its too low to illuminate a bulb.
-
i will be going to the garage on friday to sort out my christmas tree dash lights :signLOL: so i will ask him to check that for me :happy2:
-
Just to put an end to this thread..
new abs sensor fitted to rear wheel... noticed the pads needed changing too, so they have also been done :drinking:. fuse for stereo checked and no current found to be draining :notworthy:, i also purchased a new battery from Euro's thinking that my current one is weak, but i havent had a chance to fit it yet and the old one is still starting the car :signLOL:
