Title: Mk5 Golf GTI inner door sills rusted - noted on MOT as advisory
Post by: macmagat on January 26, 2022, 11:49:16 pm
During a recent MOT, it was noted as an advisory that the inner door sills were rusting through. I asked to be shown and true enough, I could put my gingers through the sill! My local garage said they could patch weld in some metal, but I want the job done properly with either new sills, or the old ones cut out and some fabricated sills welded in. Could anyone please advise me of a restoration company that would undertake this or a Mk5 GTI welding specialist company that could help. I live in Buckinghamshire, but willing to travel. Many Thanks in advance.

Sill replacement is a standard job for any body shop and VW sell the relevant repair panels.  It's a big job though.

The panel looks like this, depending on door count.

Anyone got an idea of the price of the sills from VW? (Just the parts not labour) If there expensive any other recomendations? Got some that will likely need doing soon too.

Just a note in case you get the aftermarket panels delivered - and to avoid high blood pressure from shock - Its normal to send panels "as-is" with no packaging, the courier label just stick to the panel.

Hi mate, if you are at this end (Amersham/Beaconsfield) of Buckinghamshire, I highly recommend Bucks Body Works on Beamond End Ln, Beamond End, Amersham HP7 0QT, 01494 712109.

The standard of work they turn out is spot on.  Predominantly in the business of full on restoration of classics, but they are also very capable with basic and smart repairs on modern cars.  I've use them a few times, and Dave is a good guy.

Good to know, thanks. They are near me and mine will need doing in the next few years.

My car has a small number of little spots that I have always assumed where where somebody has chipped the paint getting in or out - mainly because one or two are quite high (close to the latch for example). I remember reading somewhere that stones can get caught in the door seal. The spots are all totally solid. Under car is very clean too, and looks good as far as I can see.

Is rusting through common? I had bad wings and the usual spot around the boot release - thought I was done.

Got me a bit worried now!

Yes, if left unchecked.

These cars have several rust prone areas.  Under the sill covers, rear wheel wells, boot release badge cavity, rear arches, front arches, front of the sills etc.

The front wings were replaced under warranty, but every other area VW got off scott free under an "Edge and fold" technicality. W@nkers. Another reason why I question my loyalty to them sometimes.

IIRC I asked about 21/2 yrs ago And was quoted something in region of £3000 for removal fitting and paint on both sides
