Title: car bra on the mk5
Post by: MAT ED30 on January 08, 2009, 10:45:49 am
put this on today thanks to Matt a and i like it and it should stop me getting hit with stone over the the summer and will only go on in dry wheather. and it could do with a bit of heat for the leather to stretch  a bit

If you're going to leave it on all the time, be very careful about grit getting under the edges and rubbing against the paint... they're a bugger for it.

Looks ace though with the roof!

yep, the grit will dull the paint after a while. that happened on my anni for a while. but they were only light marks so came straight out with one pass of a Porter cable, and no stone chips! ;)

Sweet, that's all I do with mine - keeps the flies and chips off for show convoys.

Have you got the full jobbie, or just the bonnet?? if the former and if you have them, remember to disable the headlamp washers in VAGCOM.

I've had the bra on my car for the last week or so, whilst the gritters have been out.

this would worry me, possibly cause as much if not more damage as stones would

This is where I got mine from www.autobra.co.uk

Trouble is they're not the genuine VW parts ones from there, although they're OK.

I imported mine from the USA, very helpful dealer at www.vwofwesthartford.com the part number for mine was ZVW-193-042 which is a US part number (made in USA too) although that may have changed as it was a year or so ago.
Description of item is a Front End Cover (Black) for a 2006 1/2 2007 V.W GTI. They probably do an R32 variant too, but you'd have to check. (mine has a red 'GTI' insignia on it)

Hope that helps. I'll post some pictures of mine up when the car bra goes back on  :happy2:

Quick Q:

Because of the way the bra sits and its liability to rub the paintwork etc, does this mean I can only ever put it on after I've detailed the car?

What about general road muck etc?

Not my cup of tea, never been a fan of them what do the fins do out of curiousity.

i used one one my mk4 and they usually have a soft inner lining to protect the paint.

that said the bonnet has to be dry and spotless before you fit it to make sure theres no abrasion. also never use them in the rain, water traps grit which will run into it.

they look good but best left for shows and long dry journeys

Keep it pinned down and unflappable at high speeds! As a result I never need them personally.....

Post by: JPC on January 17, 2009, 10:29:44 pm
someone asked what do the fins do

they create downforce on the bra (ooo er) so the thing doesnt flap about at high speed, its pinned to the bonnet
Title: Re: car bra on the mk5
Post by: VC on January 17, 2009, 10:34:57 pm
The flaps arent really for aerodynamics, the airspeed naturally keeps the bra flat if fitted correctly but they do help.  their main job is to act as a bug deflector...you see, keeps the bugs off the front and off the screen too, its what they were originally designed for 'bugbra's' then they became a natural protection solution and got nicknamed car bras. the gap between them is an air channel to stop it causing stress on the bonnet at speed with the deflectors channelling the air up over the screen and not onto it
