Title: Recon rack. Mk5 gti.

Looking more likely :-(. Did a quick search before and a company called Western Power steering can do me a recon rack for 228 delivered. Which after looking how much brand new ones its a huge difference.

Anyone else to ask before I order one? Mine is a gen 2

Can get a recon shaftec rack off one of our parts supplies for 286 plus vat.

I would avoid a recon MK5 rack.  Get a low mileage MK6 rack (gen 3) off ebay or a recon MK6 rack.  Not many rack suppliers touch MK5 racks with a barge pole now.

£268+VAT sounds a bit cheap.  You're normally looking at £450-£550 for a recon gen 3.

If you go MK6 (you won't have a choice in the coming years) you will also need the wiring harness to go with it, and some VCDS coding.

Cheers for the reply mate. Do work in the trade so obviously the price is a bit cheaper than retail. Got a price off another supplier for the same make and was nearly £400.

I think I got my MK6 one from Power racks direct, for around the £450 mark.  Probably cheaper for you then  :happy2:

As you say, these things are stupid money from VW.

Used western power steering for my gen 3 rack, they supplied the upgraded loom needed to do the change too.

Getting it double and tripple checked a week Friday as I'm off and it's Easter etc.

Will probably go down my local supplier and grab a shaftec. If there's any issues it would be sorted quickly.

There used to be two certainties in life: taxes and death.  But there's actually 3: taxes, death and MK5 rack replacement  :grin:

At least the Gen 3 is an upgrade, so every cloud and all that.

Don't get another Gen1/2 mate, it's a waste of time if you're keeping the car.  Get the Gen3.
