Title: New mystery piece of plastic in Sump
Post by: OllieVRS on May 21, 2022, 09:47:57 pm
Every time I drop the sump there's a new surprise waiting for me - this time it was a piece of orangey plastic and one of the oil pump bolts.

The oil pump bolt probably wasn't tightened enough and would be to heavy to be a risk of getting in the pump chain anyway so I'm not too worried about that.

But the plastic piece is yet another mystery I'm hoping someone might recognize. It was jammed in the side of the pick up pipe mesh  :confused:

Does anyone know what it is?

That will be your dipstick.the orange ones disintegrated over time, get the newer yellow one, clean out the sump and you're good to go.FYI may as well clean up the pick up pipe while you're there!

Thanks for advice, but as far as I'm aware my dipstick is intact. The sump was completely clean otherwise, no metal flakes like the first time I dropped the sump after buying the car thankfully. I didn't spot anything besides that one plastic piece and the bolt. Maybe it's left over from a previous owner and was just lodged somewhere.

Looks more like cam chain tensioner pad bits which do turn an orange like color. But not completely certain as the shape differs in that I see radius instead of squared in the areas circled.

I just don't see it being any part of this;

Cheers for the reply and the photos.

Huh. That is pretty frightening to think about, although I've never heard the slightest rattle from the cam chain in my half a year of driving the car, neither on a hot or a cold engine. And I am pretty paranoid about the stuff so I would've definitely noticed if there was any.

I'm guessing the cam chain tensioner was replaced after it failed by a previous owner (and scratches near the balance shaft sprocket on the oil pump prove it's had low oil pressure in the past). They probably missed a piece. The plastic piece must've been lodged somewhere and over my 5000km, got shaken lose and flowed down into the sump.

I find it odd that there's only one piece. I would assume if it has fragmented currently there would be lots of different plastic pieces.

I found random stuff in the sump the first time I dropped it, like 1cm of insulated electrical wire, a 1cm metal shard and broken up pieces of the pump chain cover, and an oil pump bolt, so I wouldn't be too surprised if this is just another well-timed gift from the previous owners  :grin:

Yes, just may be a previous catastrophe another dealt with and the piece you have there took time to work its way out of hiding. If ever you remove the chain cover...just give both upper and lower pads of the tensioner a good visual inspection. And keep those ears tuned in, LOL.
