Finally after months my car will be getting thr jobs done whilst I'm away on hols.
The company I've bought this rack from (we deal with them alot) assures me this will fit. It looks to me like a gen 3 rack?

If it is a gen3 rack, I believe it will also need the updated harness.......Pudding did this to his if I recall.
-
Yeah Gen 3 has 3 mounting holes vs Gen1/2’s 4, which is the visual clue. Gen3 is the one you want anyway. Most rack refurbishers throw 1 & 2s in the bin. They were obsoleted years ago.
Yep, you will need the MK6 harness to go with it. It’s all covered in the gen 3 rack thread in how to guides & troubleshooting.

Cheers guys. I'm in work and trying to get stuff done before I go away tomo. Would anyone have a part number?.

Just ordered
4x Steering rack bolts.
4x Subframe bolts.
1x Centre bolt.
2x Other bolts.
Revised loom which wax 116 plus vat.
Total Inc vat. 168
-
I'm surprised the loom hasn't gone up by much! VAG wiring harnesses normally cost a fortune so that's pretty reasonable.
-
Hopefully the cars sorted when I get back.
Having,
Genuine belt, water pump and cam follower too. Get it mot'd and advertise if when I get home. Id not driven it for over a week until this morning as I've been using an octavia diesel. The golf drives so well and feels like a rocket ship in comparison ha ha.
-
I don't mind VAG diesels. Easy to loaf around town in and better for crawling in traffic, punchy at urban speeds etc. But yeah, on the open road there's no comparison against a petrol turbo engine :happy2:
-
Okie dokie. Back from hols and the car is all done.
It's had
Supply and fit steering rack.
Cam follower.
Timing belt and water pump
Out of interest how much labour do you think that would be?
-
I supplied the rack
-
Somewhere in the region of 8 hours labour to do all that, inc VCDS rack coding.
-
450
-
Not bad at all
-
To be honest I thought it was going to be like 350 ish, so 450 seemed a bit dear. But tbf it will have been done properly.
-
Dear? 8 hours at a dealer @ £100 per hour...... you did well :happy2:

I work in thr car trade, I expect everything for £20 lol

I go with dealer prices as worst case so anything cheaper is a bonus, but yeah, twenty quid  Stay away from BMWs and Mercs
