I was just quoted £430 to replace both rear brake dust shields. Quoted 4 hours labour. I'm thinking it's way off the mark.
I was expecting it to be around £100 -£120
It's a local garage who up until now have seemed to offer good value.
-
Fairly big job as not only the brakes have to come off but also the hubs have to come off too.
-
If they're rusted and rattling sometimes you can just about cut them off with tin snips. That's what happened to mine anyway. If you can get away with that I wouldn't bother replacing them unless you're going off roading, I don't run any with zero issues even in bad uk weather.
I didnt think the hubs had to come off but I have not had do much more than the rear shocks and pads on the rear so happy to be proven wrong.
-
They are rusted and one is rattling. I'm going to have a look at the weekend to see if I can cut them out and not replace if I can do it without taking hub off.. Spending that much money on them just isn't on top of my list!
I am having flashbacks to the total ball ache removing the caliper carrier is. I swore blondnid never attempt that ever again!

Yeah at a price that steep you may aswell do the discs at the same time since the caliper carriers are a bitch to get off anyway to replace them.

I did the rear pads and discs about 25k ago, so they are still in good shape (unfortunately!!)

The rears can be cut to fit NO need for all that work I have RIDEX ones fitted ebay search for FEBI ones You will need 3 new fixing bolts too
-
Wait until you need a rear bearing, or a brake job. Some people cut out the thin section of the new shield across the 2 lower bolts, which will negate the need to remove the hub, but it may make it floppy like a slice of Tesco basics ham.
It's not that big a job anyhoo. Removing the bearing hub is a piece of soft and squishy cake. It's one bolt  The only biatch bit is the caliper carrier bolts, but even that is just a matter of having the right tools and experience.

I've now ordered some off eBay and some new bolts. Going for the cutting method for now and leaving the hub where it is.

Paint any bare metal to combat rust (Im sure you have enough rust to tackle)

I cut the thin section out the middle of the shield, to then slot it over and bolt down..........similar to what the fronts are like. No issue at all
-
Very likely the shield will just pull off or twist off
If your doing it properly, getting the brake carriers off that's the hardest part. the rest is straight forward
If you like stone guards there are Galvanised ones out there - IIRC the bolts holding them on are M5 - use stainless bolts.

I am hoping they just pull off. I have bought new shields and bolts, although I've got M6. I'll attempt the to take carrier off. Last time I ended up buying a swivel head ratchet which helped with access and leverage.
-
Jayzuz! It cost me £50 for one side with me supplying the shield and bolts.
-
Aye, silly price isn't. Similar to the chap on here getting quoted £420 to fit a carbon can. A mate told me the other day he was quoted £450 to fit springs to his M135i, and it's just as easy to do as a MK5. It seems local garages are getting a tad greedy.
But yeah, I paid about £35 each for the shields from the dealer.
-
Fronts don’t need the hubs coming off but disc will the rears will or cut them to fit around
-
Rub back and paint obvious rust and sandwich some massive washers over the holes that have rusted out and bolt them back down again

Started this today. Didn't get far as I couldn't find my stubby triple square M14 socket, but found the longer one which I know is too long. Lost all my patience within 2 mins of not finding the socket and then attacked it with a Dremel, which wasn't really successful.
Going to go at it with some tin snips tomorrow - it's so rusted it's flapping about so think I can get in there with some snips. Basically going for a bodge!

If you're just removing, tin snips will work fine, that's how I got both of mine off
-
Yes, just removing them for now. Need to buy some tin snips though!
Would these be man enough? https://www.screwfix.com/p/aviation-tin-snips-set-3-pack/2941v

Had the same problem, rusted through all screw holes and hit a pot hole thing was completely loose and rattling around. Used tin snips too, mine looked like these

Still haven't replaced them, have new ones waiting, I'm thinking I will put them on when I next do discs and pads. Really can't be assed with taking the hubs off so I will cut and paint the new ones
-
All done. I bought the 3 pack of snips and they worked well. No more rattling. Thanks all for your help.
