Title: Need a new battery charger
Post by: Lewo on December 22, 2022, 09:05:20 pm
My trusted Lidl £12 battery charger from a few years ago has given up the ghost.  :signLOL:
What other chargers are ok for not lots of money?
The Gti has the biggest battery out of the 3 batteries that it would be used on.

Thanks for any tips/links.

I bought a CTEK MXS 5.0 battery charger off eBay a few years back for £40 and it’s been brilliant. It revives very flat battery as well as trickle charge. You can also get a battery quick connector if you charge regularly.

Buy a cheap one. I’ve been using CTEK for years on multiple cars and I am not convinced they last longer or are better. I’ve replaced 4 or 5.

I’ve stuck with them because the cars are wires with CTEK plugs and it helps being able to rotate, but I do grimace at the cost.

I was going to recommend Ring, but look for battery conditioning as a feature

My battery was completely goosed, before the cold set in I would leave it for 3 or 4 days and it would be very slow turn over - but would always start.
Knowing the cold would make it harder to start I needed to do something,
My brother in law offered his Halfords branded Ring charging that had battery reconditioning, this dissolves the crystals that build up on the plates.
Still sceptical I plugged it in - told to do it twice that took nearly 24 hours, but it has made a huge difference.
I jumped into the Golf yesterday after over a week of parked up and it was was fully charged.

I bought one from Halfords, like, 20 years ago or something and it's still going strong   I think it was 40 quid or something.  C-Tek are a trusted brand but typically for me, mine blew up after a couple of years. I seem to have that sort of luck.

Not just me then lol. My charger is kept in a drawer in the shed and only got used around 4 or 5 times so no idea why it packed up.
I did think about getting one of the regenerating ones but thought, what's the chances it won't last long for me... :signLOL:

Ah, could be damp related failure then as electronics don't like being moist

You could just get one of those modern jump starters from Amazon instead and just leave it indoors on standby?  Some of them can start diesel trucks and are smaller than a milk carton!

I do myself an injustice....it's a mancave with a dehumifier  :signLOL:
A mate has one of those booster packs and they are pretty good tbh.
At the moment I have the luxury of having another car to use if I have issues with the golf thankfully so battery can be charged overnight if need be.
