Title: Coming Home!
Post by: Kemosabi1 on April 03, 2010, 12:33:27 pm
Hi all.  I've just bought my 2nd MK5 Golf GTI.  I bought a black 3 door back in 2005 new but with the arrival of kids etc made the biggest mistake of my life and sold it just short of 3 years later in favour of a Land Rover Freelander 2.  Land Rover was pricey to maintain and reliability bugs galore so decided to stick a sensible head on and get a Honda Civic (standard not Type R).  I've had the Honda for a couple of years now but at best would rate it as average - suspension and refinement particularly poor.  Always kept my eye on GTI's (always black).  Last week spotted a 56 plate, 20,000 miler in 5 door for £12990.  A few phone calls and a test drive andI'm in love all over again.  Signed on the line and picking the car up on Tues/Weds - literally can't wait.  Was so good getting back in that car, the quality etc it's a place you want to be.  Very clean example, when I sold mine it had done 20,000miles so I wanted one with no more mileage to still get the new car feel.  The interior is mint, not a bean of wear on the side bolsters of the seats.

My 3 year old son shares a love for a black GTI and always points them out when were out and about.  He's beside himself now he knows we are getting one to the point where his eyes fill up with tears when I come home in the Civic - last night he said 'But Daddy, I REALLY don't like Honda's'!  Me too!

Here's to the best all round car money can buy.

Cheers guys - can't wait.  Spent a bit of time on here looking at various threads - everyone seems to 'mod' there cars!  I might disappoint, i'm all about standard everything - if VW didn't design the GTI that way who am I to change it.

Could be a thread in it's own right to find who has owned the most MK5 GTI's.  Have you had other cars in between or just swapped from one to another?!

Can't wait to pick mine up, I'm instantly inspired to book a holiday in Cornwall to get a good 8 hour through the night drive in.  Did that in the old one and loved it (just stocked up on the red bulls).

Car's got the added bonus of the VW iPod adaptor being fitted.  Anyone any views on this?  I've heard about the terribly restrictive play options (just setting up some playlists in anticipation).  Anything will be a bonus after the FM Transmitter rubbish I have been putting up with in the Civic for the last year - impossible to not have a level of background hiss so providing this adaptor has decent sound qualityI will be a happy man.

Thats just great Kemosabi,

This thread should have had a "Once upon a time" at the beginning and a "And they all lived happily ever after" at the end.

Sounds like you found a beauty mate  :happy2:

I was gonna sell my ED30 and get an S3 a while ago but I have decided to keep the ED30 (for another 2yrs) and start really enjoying it. (some track days etc) :driver:

Here's to many happy years of motoring  :drinking:

....sorry for all the smilies  :ashamed:

Heard that before mate.

Just start off with some H&R or Eibach 30mm lowering spring. They make such a HUGE difference, you will honestly think your standard car was on stilts.

Don't forget to post some pictures of the car!

The sound quality is good, just as good as CD. Set up playlists 1-5 with your music on, upto 99 tracks per playlist. CD6 is a play all tracks on ipod feature and I usually shuffle these.

HI

Sounds like weve been in the same boat upon the arrival of kids and went for vehicles other than a Golf...Ive now owned 5 GTi's over the years and just bought an 08 edition 30 Gti having eventually convinced the wife its the right choice after driving an 05 Toyota Rav 4 and 55 ford focus Zeatec (YUk)

Looking forward to picking it up Thursday this week hopefully so thought Id join this forum..looks like a good site with loads of experience

Nasir - How do you shuffle playlist 6? (i.e. everything on there?) sounds like it will no doubt become a preferred option.  To be honest, for free I can more than live with that system (although let's see what I'm saying in 6 months!)

Monte - No worries re the smilies - that's how i'm feeling!  Either picking the car up tom afternoon or Weds morning.  Will get some piccies up when I can (it will be standard for the forseeable future! - I have no idea what you said to me re the lowering, different lingo! ).  Let's hope it is a happy end to the story!

Steve - Very similar boats!  Good work with the Ed 30.  Do you know when they first came out I wasn't overly keen, preferred the stock GTI.  Appreciated the body coloured bumpers but the wheels although a great design didn't suit the car as much as the Mmonza's.  I have to say since then the look has nothing but grown on me, love them.  Golf ball gearstick as well - what colour did you go for?

Only problem I have is I'm so wary of being ripped off with a clone or somet.  See below the action I took when looking into this car, I'll run through the spec and price then what I did to put my mind at ease.

56 plate, black (metallic) 5 dr GTI - standard in every way except iPod Interface and mud flaps
21,000 miles
2 owners, just serviced, mot'd.
£12,980 - seemed a good deal to me, interior literally as new

I thus far have checked:
HPI report - all clean
VIN numbers below window, under bonnet (dirty, no sign of being touched - that said, wouldn't mind a picture of what this should look like to compare against if anyone has)
Asked for previous owners number (checked against V5).  Spoke to previous owner for 30 mins on phone who was from Scotland - top guy, had nothing but good things to say about car, he bought a year a go with 10k on clock, did another 10k motorway then sold (checked reasons for sale, appear genuine and no reason to lie!)

Dealership have been spot on - autovip.co.uk - check the website (car is still on there), they deal mainly in prestige cars, dealer confirmed don't normally sell VW but were offered this one and was impeccable so bought.

Anything else I should be checking or am I just paranoid?  £12,980 strikes me as a good deal - not too good to be dodgy?  Nothing has felt dodgy, rear driver door sticks a little on opening - from what I can tell neither previous owner had kids so doesn't sound like it has been used much.  When I spoke to previous owner he did mention that without prompt that he had noticed it when he bought it but again it was a car purely to take him to work so again no usage.  Panels etc look fine and I'm sure a bit of WD40 will cure as it is minor.

I get like this with every second hand car I buy (better to be safe suppose!).  Even the Honda Civic when I bought that from a Honda main dealer I went through a similar exercise!

Big post - sorry.  as mentioned, I'm really built up for this car!

Dont blame you for being paranoid parting with a lot of dosh, but does sound like you got a great deal. Ive got the metallic black ED30 which other than the standard extras for the model is pretty basic. Would have liked Xenons and maybe a sunroof and a Sat nav/ bluetooth head unit with multi changer would have been desirable but I suppose I can add the head unit and ipod connector when i get it home.

Bought mine for £17500 from a VW dealer, probably top end but payed the extra for main dealer and that extra piece of mind i suppose. Bought 5 Gti's over the last (almost 18 years) and just love em.

My Mk1 had the interlargos interia and golf ball gear stick so brought back many happy memories of a top car I wish I still had today.

Will post some pics of it when I pick it up, when do you get yours?

Steve - picked mine up yesterday afternoon. Sweet, need to get some pic's on here but have been too busy driving!  Had today off work also.  Added bonus which I didn't realise is I have heated seats.  You getting your tomorrow?  All the best for that!

Steve glad your happy with the car, sounds like a good deal, bought mine a couple of months back, 05 GTI leather xenons with 27k for £13 so a good deal all round.  If you have heathed seats but not the leather then its likely you have the winter pack so you should have headlamp washers as well, larger washer bottle and low washer warning.  :happy2:

If you have you should see two cut outs on the front rubbing strips that hide the washing system, and if you switch lights on and clean the screen they will activate.

Enjoy the driving, and you have the best weather for playing with and keeping your new baby clean  :driver:

RichN83 - Good Shoooout!  Bonus, you're spot on.  I saw the washer fluid yellow symbol come on briefly as part of the start up earlier, remember thinking 'don't remember having that on the old GTI' - that would be why - winter pack.  Think neighbours think I'm mental at 10pm dragging my wife out to examine whether the headlights get a spray - bone dry evening n all.  Couldn't resist having a peak myself and of course got soaked - never mind, well worth it.  Is there anything better than buying a car and realising after the event some bonus goodies that the seller didn't even pick up on?

Steve - can only imagine the pain mate!  It will be all the sweeter when it does arrive.

Excellent news mate,  :pomppomp: you sound like you've got a little beauty there.  I had a little blast out in mine last night, with the windows down for the first time since getting the car and the noise is brilliant hearing the exhaust and the DSG pop when shifting, followed by turbo spin down.  Truly awesome cars!  :driver:

Sorry mate just seen this, car looks lovely btw. If you haven't already found it, it's the 'mix' button on the top left. Wait a couple of seconds till the first track of the ipod plays then press it. To be honest it's not the best ipod interface but its quite good once you get use to it.

Yeah get some pics up steve, and now youve had your first hit you will be finding every excuse to get out and drive  :driver:

I've put 3500 miles on mine since January and its only used on the weekend. re the pictures you just need somewhere to host the pictures such as Picasa (can be found through google home page moving mouse over more and clicking on photos, then you can use a pre-existing google account to sign in and upload.

Once youve done that just copy and paste the image url between the (img) markers and bang!  :happy2:

And as youve said  :worthless:

Look forward to seeing pics.  The one's i've posted were my first effort and I used PhotoBucket (not used before), that was dead easy and straight forward.

1.5 weeks on and I think it's a better car every time I drive it.  I'm annoying people by going on and on - don't care.  Appreciating it all even more second time around - I've tasted some bitter so I can now appreciate the sweet.

Even spent £70 on cleaning products, thought will give it a shampoo, clay, wax etc  - never done that before either but what the heck.

Been a while since checked this post - just had a re-read and enjoyable it was.  GTI lovely as ever, up to 35,000 miles now.  Leeds-Scarborough and back today with the family - still every bit as enjoyable as when first got it.  Averaged 48mpg on way there which is a new record for a 'run'.

Sweet car (and true to my word still standard!)

Alt Best.
