Just checked the VW website. £789 with water pump. When I had mine done last and checked it was at least £200 less. Getting worried now as wife's Skoda needs a cambelt soon

Genuine timing belt kit with water pump is £361, so that is a hefty chunk for labour and coolant.

That's expensive I just payed £826 for full cambelt kit water pump auxiliary belt full service and full health check

I think i paid around 400 at aks last time i had mine done.

Had mine done in 2020, was £549. £789 now, and has to be within 15 years old

A couple of months ago I had my cambelt, pump and fluids etc.......all genuine parts done by a specialist I have know for years. It came to £410 all in
When I had it done, I was told the parts had recently over doubled in price and TPS were breaking up some kits.......so on some engine types a cambelt kit was not a complete cambelt kit like it was historically. The TFSI was in this instance, but he TDi's seem not to be apparently.

Just called VW Breeze in Poole, and they confirnmed the £789 Fixed price, and said that was a discounted price from £1061.....
And £190 for an oil and filter change - which didn't sound too bad.
It's a wedge, as Pudding says, on an older car as a proprtion of the value ....... £800 on a £30k car doesn't sound as bad. Same amount of work I suppose, gulp. I only do about 2-3,000 miles a year, but of course it's the timespan, not the mileage.....

Discounted from £1061?! Eh? :stupid: The price on VW's site is the price! Sounds like sales flobble from the dealer to make you feel like £789 is a bargain!
£190 for an oil change is also scandalous. It's a £40 job DIY :grin: That's for Quantum Platinum+ 5W40 and an OEM Mahle Knecht filter from ECP.

Even using Millers & OEM filter would be around £70 if you got the oil on sale price.
And this thread reminds me, I need to check when cambelt was done last!

In the 12 years we've had ours I've always used the dealer as they were always competitive, once I took it to a Skoda dealer!
However late last year I took it to a specialist where it cost £560 Vs £789 at the dealer. Crazy pricing.

AKS are expensive so I wouldn't take it there personally.
Any old garage can do it. Engine mount bracket removal is the faffiest part of the whole job. Once you're ready to install the belt and pullies etc, an 8 year old could do it.

Popped in AKS today since mine needs cambelt done this year as as well, they said its around £400 all in so I think you cant find anywhere cheaper, as all other places quote around £400 (in London, might be cheaper else where) just for the labour.... which is stupid money. The only problem with AKS is that they are very busy, as always, so they dont take any bookings at the moment.

I agree, it's not particularly difficult or involved. Any reputable garage should be able to do it. Also there are loads of VAG specialists around that must have changed hundreds of them by now, taking it to a main dealer is madness.

Either they are massively marking up their parts pricing, or taking a hit on the labour. At £400 'all in' (which assumes water pump and labour), something doesn't add up there.

Well you can get a kit from ebay for £200. Still, for someone like me who can't DIY, around £400 mark seems reasonable. Can't say the same about other places that want same money just for labour. Does it really take 4-5h to do it?

They only use genuine parts. You'd have to ask them specifically to use ebay parts, and if it's £200 with a water pump, hmmmm. At minimum I would use a Continental or INA kit.
It'll be 3-4 hours in a workshop with a lift and all the tools.

Independent garage I've MOTed the car with for last three years of ownership said £500 labour but didn't quote the part, so probs £850ish from them?
Bit pricey no?

Had the same quote from the dealers last year total rip off, so bought the parts and done it my self, i only use genuine parts, there was no way i was going to earn £800 in a day, so took the day off and done the job, 4 hours all done

I paid £525 for cambelt (INA) and waterpump recently. Included 4.5 hours labour at £60ph.
I reckon using genuine parts anything around £700 would be a decent price.

That is unfortunately the shape of main dealer pricing now, across the board. Cheers Brexit (plus other reasons).
Crazy to think when I got my Ed30 back in 2014, a cambelt and pump cost me £350.....at a dealer!! That is one hell of a jump in 10 years :surprised:
If you are capable, then do it yourself. As well as insanity grade A level pricing these days, there is a competency crisis to go with it, so you can almost guarantee shoddiness from dealer spannering these days.
