Title: Pistonheads £10k Golf mk5 project.
Post by: GVK on April 27, 2023, 11:10:48 pm
Pistonheads have uploaded their first vid in a series , where they have bought a mk5 GTI and with the rest of the 10k are going to mod it using parts from eBay. Their goal is to make it quicker around a track (No mention which track) than a Golf R.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=23&t=2031932&i=0

All well and good should be able to buy suspension/brakes/wheels/tyres etc from eBay but how will they tune it???

Ko4 hybrid?

Should be doable.  They only need to beat the Golf R once, so ebay stuff should last one lap

My first thought was damn I'm going to have spent near 8k after all the maintenence and fixing, and I'm nowhere near beating a golf r lol.

But he even said in the vid they're not too interested in repairs, so I guess if the whole budget is going on mods, then it should be doable.

For one lap at least

Won't be difficult to beat a Golf R around a track, they aren't particularly quick. Coilovers, 7R brakes, pair of ARBs, anti lift kit and 270-280 bhp should see an R off.

Is it a MK7 or MK8 R they're racing against? I didn't read the whole article. If it's a MK8, they might have their work cut out

The biggest problem will be traction out of corners, but if they can gain something in straight line speed..... but as GVK said, it depends on the track.

I think it's a mk8 R 20...

Should be interesting then  :happy2:

Seems very ambitious to me... Seeing as they've already spent 5k on the car. I think it'd be very hard to beat a MK7 R for that money let alone the new one.

I'm not that confident they will be able to do it unless they do something drastic like bin the interior. K04 kit installed and mapped, plus brakes, plus suspension seems like a bit of a stretch for £5k, especially since the clutch would probably start slipping after lap 1. Bin the interior, stick a stage 1 map on the K03 and then do brakes, tyres and suspension? Would it be quick enough?

Ugggh Curborough.  :fighting2:

They picked the crappiest track.

Yup!  That track suits the R more than it does the GTI! Traction out of corners!

Over 5 seconds just to catch up to the R, let alone beat it   On a stumpy little track like that, that is a huge amount of time.

I was impressed the GTI with it's piddly little 15 year old brakes was only a car length behind the R braking from 60 - 0.  Exactly my point about stupid Lambo brakes on Golfs being a complete waste of time and money

Must be a sign of getting old when the pro racing driver looks about 12 yrs old  :signLOL:

I found it interesting that they didnt use the professional driver to give an apples to apples comparison.

I guess they are going to make the point that driver skill and training is more effective that performance mods..

Yeah that's a good point.  I'm sure the pro could have wrestled the GTI round the track faster than the YouTuber.

I'm sure it will all end with an over dramatised 1 second win for the GTI in any case, otherwise why bother

Part three up now.

Nice to see them using some second hand parts, though i guess staying in budget wouldnt have been achievable otherwise.

More power with Revo bits and tune

More power with Revo bits and tune

He said at the end they got 273bhp, does anyone else feel they could've gotten a bit more, considering all the new mods? I thought that's power you can get with just a downpipe and tune, or am I wrong in thinking that?

But I'm coming from a car that dyno'd at 232hp with just an intake remapped to 'stage 1+', so by no means am I one to talk about getting less power than expected. Just want to know what you guys think.

I think thats about right for the mods still on a KO3.

Tbh I lost interest in the lap time vs Mk8 Golf R when they told us it was only a 30 second ish lap around half of Curborough, what's the point really? The fact that they're timing with an iphone over such a short 'lap' introduces such a big margin for error that it's a pointless exercise. The modifying has been entertaining though and I suppose them giving the MK5 some publicity won't hurt our cars residual values :happy2:

Nah, it's about right for everything thrown at a K03.  Until someone actually removes the engine and measures it properly on a DIN certified engine dyno with industry standard loads, I will always call BS on rolling roads and hub dynos

Yeah it's a stupid track for this project.  I'm not a fan of the presenter asking the tuner stupid questions on behalf of what he assumes is a dumb audience. Still, it is the way of things these days I guess

Not a suprising result, I'm glad they didn't ham it up and try to dramatise it into some neck and neck finish or smth.

Sound like an LSD would have been a big help.

Rick Astley's son's hair was bouncing around a lot more in the MK5. Good old BC Racings

Poor old Granddad MK5 trying to get down with the kids at the club. Looked out of it's depth really.  That's evolution for you.  It's like putting a current 911 GT3 RS against a 20 year old one. Fun, but daft

Both of them on the Ring, the R would be a full minute faster probably

Enjoyed watching the series but... I'm certain if they didn't just do the equivelant of bolting on whatever the clueless sales rep at any performance parts supplier would suggest then it would be quicker

I didn't finish watching the series. So they upgraded the brakes on the 5  and the much heavier R still stopped shorter?

Did they fit ARBs?

The 5 did well to be fair, but it was just a rubbish track and a 4WD car with more power and torque vectoring is so going to trounce most FWD cars, except maybe a Civic Type R

From memory they fitted

BC coil overs
S3 345mm brakes
Nankang NSR2 tyres
Milltek sports cat (Already had a Milltek cat-back)
Revo intercooler
Revo intake
Revo Stage 2 + map

Think thats about it.
