Title: Help please. No boost and rattle noise
Post by: Onethreelee on June 15, 2023, 05:35:27 pm
Firstly hello I'm Lee and new to the forum.
I'm from the uxbridge area.
I own a graphite blue 5 door mk5 gti with I want to modify and make DIY vids to help people out along the way.

In desperate need of help. I have no boost and no codes.
I have changed the dv.
I have changed the boost control solenoid.
Still no boost.
Also a major rattle from the timing chain cover that instantly stops when I
Unplug the oil control valve.
Please please help.

The rattle is likely a broken oil control ring in the chain cover, it's quite common.  I suspect the middle ring of the 3 has snapped, which causes the rattling when hot.

As for no boost, what, none at all?  You would definitely get underboost fault codes, even if the turbo was completely shot to pieces.  The broken oil ring doesn't affect boost, so you need to give it a good going over and do some good old fashioned trouble shooting on it.  Laptops won't tell you everything unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply il whip the cover off and check the 3 rings.
As for the no boost its not logging any codes I can hear the turbo wanting to work and boost gauge reads normal vac pressure and boost to 1 psi if that.
I've changed the dv and boost control solenoid.
My next guess was going to be boost pressure sensor on the front pipe or maybe maf as there is no difference when I unplug it.

I've checked all the hoses and vac lines and no leaks to my knowledge no.
No smoke from exhaust and starts and idles as it should ( apart from the typewriter doing overtime in the timing chain cover when hot)

I'm starting to loose hope

It's hard to see/access but I'm wondering if the wastegate arm has come off the turbo

I think you and me have had the exact same thing happen at the same time?!?!?!?  :indifferent:

My car feels like it has no turbo, I can hear the turbo fluttering so I wonder if the wastegate is stuck open like others have said...

Well I'm feeling your pain I re scanned the car today and I'm now getting a code for the boost pressure sensor - value below lower control limit but I think that's just because the car is seeing no boost. I'm flat out busy with work ATM so hard to get time to work on the car. Maybe just have to find a reputable vag guru to take it fix it and then give me the eye watering bill.
Good luck with yours let me know how you get on

Gonna get under mine tomorrow, someone on the forum said to check the hoses to the intercooler, if they look okay it will likely be a wastegate or actuator issue.

Will let you know

Checked my hoses and they’re fine too mate, borrowed a sh*tty code reader and it gave me code 01314 which says it can’t communicate with the ECM.

Think that’s a false code to be honest

This is a video I took today with my foot the the floor, is yours the same?

eature=share

Pretty much its not full blown limp mode it just no boost I have a boost gauge and the vac is normal and then boost stops at between 0 and 1 psi il try get a vid after work on my way home so you can see.

Did you manage to check your actuator??

Unfortunately not mate as for some reason the heavens opened today and haven’t stopped…

Mines going on on Tuesday, I’ll be sure to feedback the issue. I have EML on now after giving it some thrashing today haha

At least you've got a boost gauge to confirm you have a leak somewhere

I need to get one sorted - I'll let you know what my guy says tomorrow and hopefully you can check that at your end

Looks like we have the same issue though

Hi Mate
Here’s what my guy says:

I’ve removed the plugs, coil pack 1 was seized in place and the plugs are all burnt, it’s also flashing the eml light is giving some indication of injectors failing.

At top end of rev range it sounds basically fkd, sounding like it wants a turbo but gonna look further into it once I’ve dropped the oil and checked condition of oil etc

He also said that the  engines absolutely blathered in oil, think rocker cover gasket has had its days tbh as there’s oils all in the plug holes too. I’m gonna compression test it too just to make sure there’s no damage to the engine especially given how it sounds.

This may be the end of my Eddy!!

Oh man so apart from plugs and coil packs you needing a turbo too.
Maybe it's an excuse to go hybrid or k04.
Hopefully don't cost you a bomb.
There's a few more toots I want to investigate befor I fully give up and call my insurance telling them I woke up and it was gone lol. (That's a joke for all you male Karen's)
Il keep this updated to what I find. If not for others amusement in our misfortunes but maybe it will help someone at some point.

HAHAHAHA I feel like burning it.

Got a new update!!!

It's not the turbo, my inlet manifold has broken and it's fallen into the engine.
Also EML flashing on/off which indicates the injectors are failing, gonna take them out and test them as we do the manifold
Apparently the car's got the runner flap delete, which I haven't done.

Oh so is this your boost leak then maybe I should check mine as I have actually done a runner flap delete. Going to check today.

Correct, the leak is from the inlet manifold.

I noticed a bit of a rattle noise around 4-5k, that was the pieces of manifold flapping about!

I'll add photos as my guy sends me them.

So after another inspection I may have found the problem or atheist part of it.
It's the turboactuator where it connects to the wastegate it has snapped.

Ah, that's your Actuator adjustable link end.

Easy replacement I'm sure, so your wastegate has been stuck open?

I've found a 2nd hand manifold from a breakers for 40 quid, injectors were caked so replacing them. Think we're good to go after that :)

Yeah looking for a replacement now.
Well done on the manifold maybe do a runner flap delete while you can to avoid any future problem I have been told they can be common so I deleted mine.
