Right guys was in the car yesterday gt tdi pulled over on a very quite road and set off with some revs next thing here a loud snap or bang and tons of white smoke coming out of the exhaust pulled over instantly and inspected car engine sounded fine when turned back on. Smoke starts to clear so I thought I'll be able to limp home, so I thought turned car round next thing it sounds like I just dropped a bag of spanners in the engine. So pull over straight away, next thing the engine starts revving it's nuts of almost redlining itsself. At this point I shat myself and turned engine off. The next bit is still giving me nightmares, the engine carries on revving. I'm stood there looking at my motor key in hand while it's sat there revving it's self into outer space. The only thing I could do was stall the engine and ended up getting towed home. Anyone have any ideas, oh and my warranty as just ran out

i have heard of rings breaking up and running off the sump oil . very bad indeed mate
-
Mate I'm gutted. I just hope it isn't an expensive fix, found out last week that I'm going to be a dad again. Was thinking of selling the car. Now I don't know what to do, there's a stunning mk5 r32 on eBay now that i fancied but now well sh*t happens
-
sounds like your turbo has gone buddy and its been sucking up oil ,thats why the car kept running with the key out
depends on the length of time it ran on oil but the engine could well be damaged too !!
sorry to hear mate and good luck :sad1:

My turbo went about18 months ago and all I got was a loss of power. None of yesterday craziness at all, very strange
-
Also don't know if it's connected but had a remap and new inlt manifold fitted by awesome just two weeks ago
-
Defo blown turbo, seals have failed and it has scavinged on the oil which is why it kept running. Had a 306 D turbo did the same to me some years ago.
When you get it to the garage the Catalytic converter will need replacing as it will be blocked with all the oil residue.
Goodluck getting it sorted.

Is it an expensive fix. And thanks for the reply
-
Can't remember what it cost Jacko, got it done under warranty. But i did have a big arguement with Peugeot over it before they did the work.
You could use it as an excuse to get a turbo back zorst, i think recon turbos can be had for 400 ish but i'm sure someone with more know how will be along soon to confirm what the costs would be.
sorry dude.

What was the mileage?

Is it an expensive fix. And thanks for the reply
unfortunately yes :sad1:
did you get the turbo done under warranty?
have you a fvwsh ?
if so then you have a good case with vw goodwill
turbo new is about 900 and even if you can clean thru the turbo back exhaust and intercooler, pipes etc it is all very time consuming :ashamed:
-
Had my turbo replaced about 4 months ago, the actual turbo from VW TPS is about £560 plus your VAT on top then the fitting and cleaning out plus any parts thats been damaged in the process of the turbo going but off the top of my head I paid £980 for turbo and rear pads and labour.
Hope that helps
Darren

Even if the turbo was still getting oil and working, how was the engine getting ignition, and therefore still revving if he had taken his key out??
-
its a diesel no ignition needed
-
Ahh yes, very good point!
-
I think a piston has popped.
-
This brings back memories, know the feeling and im gutted for you.
It does seem cheaper than replacing a k04 though so theres a positve for ya .
-
sounds like the turbo has gone..mine cost £1400 for a new one at awesome last year..hope it hasn't caused any lasting damage to the engine :sad1:
-
Maaan....I feel it for you... you have my sympathies.... let me know if there is anything I can do.
-

My girlfriends brothers brand new Volvo C30 did the same. Volvo ran a load of tests but couldn't find anything, came up with the conclusions that have been suggested on here already (turbo sucking up oil). They tried giving it back to him which he wasn't having any of and eventually they bought it from him and it went back to Volvo HQ for further testing. Don't think he ever found out the true cause though.
Hope it hasn't caused too much major damage mate :sad1:
