Title: Edition 30 Splitter
Post by: smilespergallon on July 06, 2023, 07:46:40 pm
I'm in the UK and I've got a black Edition 30 and the front splitter/spoiler is in pretty bad shape (see pics below).

My Mother has a driveway with a pretty steep incline and it has been battering the splitter for the last few years. I kind of gave up caring after a while, but now the driveway is fixed and I'm looking to replace the splitter.

What are the best options for replacing it? The part number is: 1K0805903JGRU

I've tried looking on eBay and Facebook for "Edition 30 breaking" but I can't find any splitters going around.

I've found a few places that offer new splitters but they're in the region of £350 to £400:

* £350 - https://surreytuning.com/product/original-vw-mk5-gti-anniversary-edition-30-front-spoiler/
* £400 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284636394145 (From Lithuania)
* £405 - https://www.awesomegti.com/shop-by-car/volkswagen/golf-mk5/original-vw-mk5-gti-anniversary-edition-30-front-spoiler/

Then there's a non-genuine one for £100:

Anyway, just looking to get some advice on if there might be any other better options out there, or what the best option might be. And also how much it would cost to get a new one painted.

I have a standard GTi and wanted an edition 30 splitter. Every one I saw on marketplace/ebay from a car being broken for parts was battered (to be expected tbh as they're older cars now). So I would advise buying new and getting it painted, luckily black is easy to colormatch so you'll be fine on that front.

If you want to save money do what I did and buy the replica one from ebay (around £120) and paint it yourself. I did mine with 2K clearcoat aerosol cans and it turned out great. Fitment is spot on but I'm assuming it's not going to be as tough as a genuine VW one. They are really easy to fit, just a couple of torx screws. If you get a replica make sure it's made out of Abs plastic and not fibreglass as they can
be hard to paint and prone to cracking.

I got one of these to replace my broken one. Pretty good quality but you have to drill holes and what not when mounting it.

Blimey, looks like someone took a sledgehammer to that!  Probably not worth £405 + paint if it's going to keep getting whacked, but genuine is always my preference personally.

Thanks, that looks really good. Nice job.

What paint did you use?

Bought some Hycote plastic primer to apply first, got my local paint supplier to mix up two 400ml cans of LC9Z paint, then covered with 2K Spraymax gloss lacquer. Think I spent around £40-50 all in. Costs a bit more than using halfords etc paint but will last way longer with the lacquer being 2k.
