Title: Hole in intercooler
Post by: Multicrazy on August 04, 2023, 11:42:05 pm
Hello everyone.

My intercooler in my 2008 GTI broke and made a hole on the side. Do I have to replace it? Was wondering if it would cause a vacuum leak and if it will affect the car’s performance in any way.

Thanks so much

Any hole in the turbo system would cause power issues, so yes it does need to be replaced.

Might have to just do that as well

Is the car modified? You could consider a JB Weld type repair on a crack like that. Failing that Maybe an S3 intercooler for around £200. No need to go for the trick stuff unless going for big power and the last few bhp really matters to you.

For the Toyosport one I think it is worth checking whether it (a) flows well and (b) cools well. If you tune with somewhere like R-Tech (or plan to) you could give them a buzz and ask.

Epoxy resin won't hold boost.  Proper plastic welding might though, but not for long.  But that type of brittle GRP material is notoriously difficult to weld, so intercooler replacement is the only permanent solution.
