Title: Buying two tyres - pick the same, or ok to mix?
Post by: jacksosi on September 11, 2023, 02:21:22 pm
I need a couple of new tyres on the rear, as they got an advisory on the MOT.

On the front I have recent Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 XLs
For a pair of those locally the price is £208 fitted

The same place has the newer Asy 6 XLs for £198 fitted

So, should I keep them all the same, or go for the newer model on the rears?

Seems odd to pay (slightly) more for a previous model

You will be fine putting the newer version on the back as wont make a difference and come the time to replace the fronts do the same because you will be in the same situation if you put the asymmetric 5 on

Cheers, got similar feedback from the TT forum (as the Q is car agnostic, and I have a TTS).

Surprisingly, Halfords mobile is coming to my house and fitting the 6's for £194.
I wouldn't use their branches, but their mobile fitting gets good reviews (and includes the balance and valve).

So Halfords mobile went fine, 2x new rears loaded.

The Asy 6 tread depth seems quite shallow however, and a quick google shows it's 6.4mm, which sounds low?
We do minimal mileage so not a big issue, but it might be for someone who racks up the miles.

That 6.4 will last much much longer than the 8mm i get on uniroyal rainsports
