Title: TTE420 with stock rods?
Post by: swansem on September 27, 2023, 12:37:16 am
Hi folks,

Just wanted to ask if anyone here who’s upgraded their turbo to a tte420 had the need to do internals as well? More specifically the connecting rods since I’ve heard these are the weakest link in our motors.

I’m trying to squeeze the max amount of power possible out of the stock bottom end (top end was already rebuilt) without having to forge the internals, I’m not sure if our stock rods would be able to handle the power that comes from the tte420, I’m planning on using APR software. Any input would be appreciated!

keep the torque low and you'll be fine

Thanks, how can I do that? Does APR offer a low and high torque option tunes? Or does that mean I would have to get a custom tune instead?

apr cap there torque to around 350ft-lb so you'll be fine

You're more likely to break a stock piston before a rod bends tbh. So long as boost onset isn't too aggressive and you have a decent downpipe and exhaust to reduce back pressure, the rods should hold up.

Thank you both for your input, I’ve contacted APR and they’ve told me I shouldn’t have any issues with their software.  :drinking:

Also depends if your motor is K03 or K04. K04 has different rods and pistons. AXX is the weakest engine, BYD is stronger, CDL is strongest.

But with a TTE420 maxxed out, I'd be doing rods anyway personally. Double the power, double the cylinder pressure.
