Title: Can adjuster question
Post by: thegolfdude on January 24, 2024, 07:33:58 pm
Hi guys I’m planning on doing a timing chain replacement with everything related to it. I can get the original cam adjuster for around 700 euros but that’s a bit high. Are there any good OE or aftermarket ones?

Not sure who's the original supplier. The genuine VW/Audi 06F109088J is listed for $820usd. Others, on the cheaper side, I see are listed at $50 and up. I suppose I would feel safer with the "genuine" offering; made by one of these A/M companies and marked up. But I would trust an A/M offering from FCP or ECS (here in the states) because they have "Lifetime Warranty" for all parts. Now those warranties don't mean they will cover all of the damage created by a failed part, but it's something at least.

I personally would maybe go with: Febi, Bremmen, or Vaico.

No is the short answer I'm afraid.  OEM ones last forever, pattern ones don't unfortunately.

I think it's Hydraulik Ring that make them for VW and I haven't seen them in the aftermarket.

I have only every seen problems with the aftermarket ones.  Unless you have a pre 06 car then you probably don't need to change it for a new one.  Just make sure there are no deep grooves in the centre of the adjuster.

@vRSAlex (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1981) is there an issue with the pre 06 units?

Cheers, Matt

Pre 06 some of the housings used steel rather than plastic oil control rings.  The steel eats into the VVT adjuster causing pressure problems and the timing fluctuates.  You will also snap any of the rings trying to refit the casing as they get caught on the grooves.  Follow the link and there is a pic of the problem: https://www.akstuning.co.uk/shop/home/538-genuine-vag-tfsi-variable-valve-timing-vvt-repair-kit-06f198088d.html

Yep that happened to me.  The middle ring snapped, which caused a god awful rattling from idle to 1500rpm when up to temp, which took an age to diagnose due to sound reflections through the engine.  It wasn't until I disconnected the N205 solenoid that it shut up, which then pointed me in the right diagnosis direction.
Thankfully the inner and outer ring didn't snap, so the VVT function still worked at least.

My engine was a plastic ring job from the factory and the wear grooves were barely felt on my finger nail, so you have to be super careful to slide the chain cover back on dead square.
