It's my 1st post and I've been a silent member on here gathering info etc. Ive bought my 1st mk5 gti last November using the ulez scrappage grant scrapping my old passat for 2k and adding my own money on top buying a mk5 gti. It's all standard apart from a res delete which the previous owner didn't even know. It's not fully speced out, but has a decent spec. factory xenons, washers in the bumpers, highline clocks, dsg, mfsw, rain sensors, auto headlights, cruise control. hasn't got sunroof, rear sensors or e/folding mirrors which I'm not fussed about. Long term plans is a major service belts, water pump, cam chain, vvt seals etc. Ive Already changed the oil, filter, oil pick up pipe and cam follower.

Few niggles I sorted out since I've owned the mk5. Changed the glovebox as it was hiding a factory phone holder behind a magnet that was stuck on.

Sourced some clean ED30/R32 Rear lights off Facebook market place locally for cheap. Was kinda surprised that brand new ED30 rear lights sell for £300+😲.

Fitted my diy inner rear lights today. Time consuming feeding the cables inside the boot all the way to the outer light wiring. I'm happy how they turned out, still looking like ed30 inner lights giving it a oem look. Phone Camera makes it out a lil orangey but its actually red.
Twin indicators 60mm yellow cob led ring.
Brake/tail lights 100mm red cob led ring.

Good thread. Can I ask what the spec is for the wing mirror switch and window switch replacements - ie, what Mk golf are they from? I've done the same as you with the headlight switch and upgraded it to a newer version with the chrome on.

Had a boost leak 2weeks ago, literally had no power and the car was running like a N/A engine. I had a feeling it would be the divirter valve because I hear a hissing sound (drivers side) going over speed bumps. Old diverter valve was f#kd.

Ordered a oem revion g version and fitted it. Now no more boost issues 🙂

Bought a Ramair oversized intake off Facebook market place and swapped the oem black silicone for some blue ones, gona fit my blue coolant silicone hoses along with the metal upgraded tee which replaces the brittle oem plastic one. Won't be keeping it chrome I've already scuffed it down an eitch primer it along with black satin black spray paint

Nabbed my self a bargain us spec bumper. Perfect for me to make a ed30 hybrid us spec rear bumper . Just need to find a OEM ed30 rear bumper when I'm ready 🙂.

Today's big job 👨🔧🛠
Replacing my cam chain, tensioner, and all the supporting hardware, plus a good service. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous doing this especially after hearing horror stories about the cam adjuster bolt head stripping out during removal. I even bought a 12mm cobalt drill bit and a backup T55 socket just in case things go sideways!
Luckily, I had my friend that came over to help by keeping a firm grip on the cam bolt tool and the lower breaker bar while I crack it loose from the upper part. Crisis averted.
The Parts List (Bought & Fitted by Me)
☑️ INA cam chain & tensioner
☑️ VW OEM cam adjuster bolt
☑️ Elring VVT seals (x3)
☑️ INA cam follower
☑️ Elring HPFP seal
☑️ Elring rocker cover gasket
☑️ Mann oil filter
☑️ Febi Bilstein 5W-40 engine oil & new sump plug
☑️ APR Blue (R8 style) ignition coilpacks
☑️ NGK BKR7EIX Iridium spark plugs x4
☑️ HPFP fuel Line Upgrade,Converting the fuel lines from the early-model banjo style to the later-model push-fit setup (and drilling a 5mm hole on the new HPFP bamboo fitting).
☑️ DV Relocation Kit brought from aliexpress paired with an OEM K04 throttle intake pipe and a blue silicone throttle body hose from eBay.
Luckly I Bought 2 cam bolt poly drive sockets. 1 is a Laser brand and the other is a BGS brand. Tried the laser Polly drive socket first and it shattered but luckly didn't damage the cam bolt head, then tried the BGS Brand and it came out perfectly👍.
Aside from the VW OEM cam adjuster bolt (sourced from VW Coverdale), all the service and cam chain,gaskets etc from Autodoc & Awesome GTI for the coilpacks and spark plugs.
There is such a massive sense of satisfaction that comes with doing all the work yourself and learning as you go. Not bad for someone who isn't even a mechanic! 😂.
