Anyone know what this is? (if there is such a thing..) Interested to know as the garage i used upped their price and said it took quite a bit longer than they expected but they capped it at 4.5 hours. Job also included replacing the aux belt if that adds any time.

I was also charged £30 for a 'turbo actuator valve' which they said broke off while taking everything apart.

 Thanks

"Book time" probably refers to the amount of time the service manual says a job will take. Most shops take this time and add an hour or 2 on-top and charge you for that amount.

Fair enough I suppose as there are always things that don't go smoothly. Total came to Just under £550. Was something like

 Timing belt kit £130
 Auxiliary belt £15
 Coolant £10
 Turbo actuator valve £25
 4.5 hours labour @ £60

 Plus VAT.

I'd say it seems like a fair price.
I done my own the other week. I didn't time myself and I was not working in ideal conditions, but it definitely took longer than 4.5 hours. I'd say if someone had done a few and knew exactly what they were doing and didn't come across any issues 4.5 hours would be doable.

The specialist I use charges 3 hours labour for belt and pump. He's done 100s, maybe 1000s, so I'd say 4.5 hours is reasonable if they haven't done many.

£60 per hour is a bargain these days.  VW is well over £100.

The parts sound cheap. Aftermarket I'm guessing?

Hi mate yeah was an INA kit. I did ask if they could use contitech but they said they always used INA without issues so I went with it. They did mention they had a few problems with Gates kits though.

Nothing wrong with INA   VW oem items

Yeah INA is good stuff.  The Continental kit uses INA idler pullies etc anyway iirc.

I had a look today what I paid for a genuine belt kit and waterpump off TPS, roughly £150 including VAT. Which seems quite reasonable.

Cheap, they quoted me double that last month. Best i could find was from a main dealer via ebay, around £250. But as above ended up going with the INA kit.

I haven't got the paperwork to hand but I ordered it the middle of June. Strange that they wanted double the price off you, unless I got lucky and it was on special offer.

You must have a good relationship with TPS to get a genuine water pump and belt kit for £150.  Dealer price for all that is well over double.

We don't use TPS much at all really. I know in the past when I used to use them quite regularly and you could actually go inside and speak to someone on the counter (the good old days) they'd have leaflets with offers on. So I might have been lucky, they made their money back with the price of the thermostat
