Title: Forged con rods with stock pistons?
Post by: ZoliWorks on October 17, 2024, 09:58:58 pm
2006 2.0TFSI BWA

Looking to fit forged connecting rods to my stock pistons, found some IE rods but they are saying they are for tapered wrist pins only. Bar-Tek on one of their blog posts say that EA113 stock pistons need trapezoid wrist pin rods. Besides IE and FCP Engineering, I haven't seen anyone else sell "drop-in" rods.

Would these rods fit my engine or do I need to replace both pistons and rods with aftermarket ones? Just doing rods would cost 30% of doing pistons and rods so that's why I'm more inclined towards them.

You'd be better off doing rods and pistons. The piston would then be the next weak link in the chain otherwise.  The factory hypereutectic pistons aren't the strongest. They like to crack the ring lands once you start upping the boost. I would get S3/6R spec ones as they have bigger wrist pins than GTI for even more strength.

I figured doing just rods and replacing the piston rings is enough since I dont want to big turbo or go above 400hp. Just wanna max out that K04.

We'll see tho, I've put everything on hold till late spring, when it gets hot enough to work on the car again since no heated garage. I prolly wont do pistons and rods unless I get a hybrid K04 since with a stock one it's not worth it to put 1.5k into a car and gain 40nm of torque and 30hp
