The noise sounds like a dry oil pump whine. It used only happen rarely when stuck in traffic for a while and if I put it in neutral it would go away. It's now happening more frequently and also sometimes when I'm driving. I was thinking about changing the oil pump but I'm not 100% sure it's that. I've trawled Google and can't find a definitive answer to whether the oil pump is only driven when in drive not neutral. There's no oil leak so I'm sure the oil level is right as I serviced it myself about 6 months ago. Has anyone else had anything similar to this happen to theirs.

I assume you changed the filter at the time of the DSG service and not just the oil?
-
Yeah, I used genuine oil and filter.
The traffic tonight and last night was quieter and it didn't do it.

I might have been barking up the wrong tree with the gearbox. The last two times it's made the noise I switched the Aircon off and it stopped, so I'm thinking it's the Aircon compressor now.

Set the tensioner to its locked position and check the other pulleys available.......but you appear to have possibly found it.

Putting it in neutral and the noise goes away really threw me out. I was definitely thinking the worst.

Most likely the flywheel. A video would help if the mic can pick it up to confirm. Mileage?
-
The mileage is just on 80k. Because it's so intermittent and random I haven't been able to actually get out of the car when it's doing it, to try and locate it. It always seems to be at traffic lights and never when I'm parking up. If it does it and I'm able to get a video I will.
