Title: Weird issue with gauge cluster; gauges not going to zero when turning car off
Post by: mk48972 on September 10, 2025, 04:00:48 pm
Hi all,

My 2008 Mk5 GTI has been standing still for 9 months (valve spring broke, had the entire cylinder head rebuilt). I finally got the engine back together a month ago and it fired right up!
But of course, something like this can’t go completely smoothly without a few issues.

The problem is with my gauge cluster. When I turn the car on, the clock always resets to 0:00, and the trip meter resets to 0 km. Apart from that, the cluster works normally.

When I turn the car off, the RPM, coolant temperature, and fuel level gauges all “hang” (see attached picture). As soon as I switch the ignition back on, the gauges respond again and display the correct values.

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this? Thanks in advance!
