Title: Random Low Oil Pressure warning
Post by: PTR12 on December 23, 2025, 12:11:04 pm
I was driving last night pretty chill, and my car decided to make me crap a little by throwing a low oil pressure warning. I shut off the engine immediately and coasted to a stop.

The thing is that i JUST made an oil pump and chain replacement 400km ago. Pickup pipe and oil pan were cleaned thoroughly.

I took a risk and briely restarted the engine and to my surprise, no weird noises, no low oil pressure light, nothing. I checked obdeleven for the oil level and it seemed to go down when i lightly accelerated so to me that looks like the pump is doing its job (damn you VW for not putting a true oil pressure sensor in the damn car) I was close to home and drove it there. Haven't even thought of starting it since.

So the oil pump is working, the chain didn't break, the pickup pipe is clean. What could it have been?

It's rare that it does it for no reason in chill mode driving. My only suspicion or question is how much sump sealant did you put on as the excess could have broken off and be blocking the pickup. This happened to me by a garage who did the pickup and then months later the light came on. .......I stripped the sump off as I too said to myself the pickup has been done, and to my surprise the pickup was blocked full of excess silicone sealant.

There wasn’t a whole lot. The entire mating surface covered in a thin layer.

I would be inclined to double check the pickup as it would be in the back of my mind.

Otherwise cam phaser wearcan bleed oil pressure and also the oil feed in the chain casing can get blocked.....the one with the micro gauze in it

The cam phaser, chain and tensioner were all replaced 1y ago. I will go and test the oil pressure after Christmas, as I am not using the car until then.

A random low oil pressure warning means your engine isn't getting enough lubrication, often due to low oil, a failing pump, worn internal parts, or a bad sensor/connection, and you should stop driving and shut off the engine immediately to prevent severe damage, then check your oil level and call for a tow if needed.
