Hi folks. In January I purchased my GTTDI from auction. Scary experience but well chuffed with the car. It has full vw service history and is on the long life service plan. I had a mechanic mate have a look over and he was happy there was no major issues. The service book however shows that the next service ain't due until early 2011.
Today the check oil level light has come on. My question is do I top up the oil or is it best to go for a complete oil change and possible service now? Just concerned as I obv don't know the exact INS and outs of the history other than what's stamped in the service book.
Cheers
Murray

i would top it up immediately and then go straight for a oil change
not 100% about the diesels but with the GTi if that oil warning light comes on it means you are critically low.
-
GET SOME OIL IN ASAP! Also check for any leaks, these engines (assume its the PD140) need to get extremely low on oil before you get the dash light on. Have you checked the oil level?
:scared:
-
Yes I checked the oil level and it looked fine above the minimum. It came on last night when I was driving so I'll have to check now when car is cold.
Is there any issues with what oil goes to top it up until I can get it changed? Obv it'll be the correct stuff for the car but other than that??
Thanks for your help guys
-
And yes it's the 140 variant. Off outside to check will let you know . . . . .
-
My old company car was a GT TDi 170 and it seemed to consume quite a bit of oil during the time i had it - from new to about 35k and i needed to top up more often than i was expecting although it did seem to calm down a bit toward the end of my ownership so perhaps it was just bedding in during that time.
Mine had no visible leaks at all and didnt smoke so i didnt worry - although as i say, it was a company car so i worried less than normal anyway. Perhaps these engines do consume a little oil though.
-
Right oil level checked, it was sitting bang on the min level so not too bad. When i got the car it had some Mobil1 oil in the boot. I'm assuming that it was probably used by the previous owner so i have topped up with that.
This Lifelong service plan, its an Awfully time between services!!
-
Long life should only be used if you meet the criteria. Otherwise stick with time and distance.
-
my 140 gttdi is on longlife oil but seen as i only do 2 miles a dat its getting change to time & distance
-
How often do you guys need to top up your oil?
-
When I first had my car, I think I went through 1l in under twelve months. After my 10k service, it's settled down and I've used less than a quarter of a litre over two years.
-
i use roughly a liter of oil every 1200miles :scared:

Snap same here!
With Decat now fitted I can smell oil fumes outside the car.

I mean i have removed the catalytic converter and replaced with a straight through pipe.

..........mine did the excact same thing. After stopping & checking it was above the min level.Topped up to the max mark & it's been fine & never came on since. :happy2: Don't worry about it just top up.

^^^ VW's 'tolerance' is 1000km/621m per litre.
Off hand, I'm sure I've topped up about 5 litres in the 20 months/13.5k miles I've had mine.
-
^^^^^ yep i know how they can say it's ok to consume 1 liter of oil every 600 odd miles is feckin ridiculous, I've never had to even top up a car oil before the gti, that's 20 liters of oil between services what's point in servicing them ? If it's getting near enough a full oil change every 2.5 k, vw need to get there act together and at least supply us all with free oil for life !
yea mate smelling the fumes, is this not just on start up ? After 5 mins and a few revs I find it disappears ?
-
I've just topped up with around 1 litre... I guess it's ok since I do push my car a bit when I get excited.

No mines there all the time since decat.

Erm - horse manure! Oil on the minimum is VERY bad. On the GTI, you are basically running with 25% less lubricant - how can that be 'not too bad'?!?!
When i got the car it had some Mobil1 oil in the boot. I'm assuming that it was probably used by the previous owner so i have topped up with that.
Make sure it is the correct type of Mobil 1 - only Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 is suitable.

It may seem long - but when used correctly (which means diesel engines, and being driven without being caned) - it is perfectly OK.

That is an EXTREME limit of oil consumption - and is usually on apparent on new engines. Once the are run in, and properly run in (like 10k miles), then oil consumption should start to dramatically reduce.
If it still drinks a litre of oil every 1000 miles after 10k miles, then it simply hasn't been fully run in.

Shucks... T_T you got me worried again about the oil warning light coming up...

Sorry to intercept this dipstick-tugging thread! But having read what you said Teutonic_Tamer on one of my posts re; Quantum Synta III 5w30 not being 'as good' as the Castrol equivilent, I have actually ran out of the Synta III, and in case I need to top up between now and my next oil change, would I be right to assume I could use a Castrol Edge 5w30 oil to top up? Or is it not worth mixing it with the Quantum until I do a full oil change?
Basically, I can only get a 5L bottle of Quantum so if I have to go down that road I might as well buy 5L's worth of SLX and do another oil change...
Thanks mate,
Sean

There is no such oil as "Quantum Synta III 5w30". The only Quantum oils which have similar names are:
- Quantum Synta 10w40 semi-synthetic - 505.00 approved - so for diesels only
- Quantum Synta Z 5w30 semi-synthetic - NO VW approval - Ford use only
- Quantum Synta ED 0w30 fully synthetic - 503.01 approved - only really meant for B5 RS4s and 225 S3s/TTs
- Quantum LongLife III 5w30 fully synthetic - 504.00/507.00 approved - the latest oil spec - but no 'Synta' in its name
So which one are you using?
would I be right to assume I could use a Castrol Edge 5w30 oil to top up? Or is it not worth mixing it with the Quantum until I do a full oil change?
Mixing oils causes no problems at all (unless you have some very rare castor based oil - which is generally only used in 2 stroke racing karts).
Basically, I can only get a 5L bottle of Quantum so if I have to go down that road I might as well buy 5L's worth of SLX and do another oil change...
How soon are you due an oil change?
-
My mistake! I was looking at the Quantum Synta bottle I used on my previous Ibiza Cupra TDI :ashamed:
It's actually Quantum Longlife 3 5w30 That i've used, last oil change, about 2k miles ago.

OK, no worries. :happy2:
Do I guess that your engine is standard, ie, not remaped? If it is standard, then the Quantum LL 3 will be perfectly adequate.
-
Standard at the moment kind sir, but I dare say a Revo may be on the cards... Probably not for a few months though! :happy2:

What service regime are you on? I hope you are on T&D.
-
I don't know... ? How do I find that out?
My car doesn't have VW service history, I bought it with about 37k on, and it just the usual 'yearly' services by garages ( a couple of them VW )
Is there something I can check to find out?
Many thanks :)

Have a read of this thread - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=65779.
Basically, 'Time and Distance' (T&D) is upto a maximum of 10,000 miles or 1 year from last service, whichever occurs first - this is a traditional 'fixed interval' service regime. The 'LongLife' (LL) regime is deemed a 'flexible interval' regime - upto 20,000 miles (for petrols - diesels can go upto 30k miles), or upto two years.
Do you know how to manually call up the service due info in your dashboard?
EDIT: fixed spelling :ashamed:
-
Hiya,
Just had a read of that now, I hadn't really thought of T&D or Longlife, as I have usually just always had a service every 10k/year, sometimes with an extra oil change in between.
I only bought the Longlife III as I thought it was a good quality oil, not to use it for 20k Miles though, same rules would apply, the 10k/year service.
I don't know how to call up service info? How do I do this (highline dash)
Many thanks

It is perfectly acceptable, and strongly advisable to still use LongLife oil, even when on T&D servicing. LongLife oils are considerably higher quality compared to non-LL oils

OK
Sit in car > turn on ignition (but do NOT start the engine) > fit seatbelt (or wait for seatbelt reminder to go out) > press and HOLD for at least two seconds (5 usually does it) the 00 reset button on the bottom right of the instrument cluster (your 'trip' odometer will initially zero, but if you hold the 00 long enough, it will revert back to what it was) > you should then get a message in the centre display stating days and miles to next service. If it is more than 9,700 miles, or more than 365 days, then the car is still coded for LL servicing.

Time for kip!

Hiya, I did this today, and the first time it said
"SERVICE NOW" then I did something and it came up
476 days or xxxx miles
So I guess thats longlife! I changed my cluster to highline a while back but hopefully it did transfer service data, either way it doesnt matter as i'll just do it by mileage/ yearly if sooner, regardless :)
Thanks for your help TT :)
