Title: TFSI over TSI Engine Swap
Post by: x5pea on April 16, 2010, 02:27:51 pm
Ive got a few 0 miles TSI's from a MK6 GTI on offer from a guy i know at silly cheap money. I was wondering if anyone on here knew if that are any differences in any of the following areas

Engine /Gear Box Mounts
Loom
ECU

Not fussed about the locating of ancillaries ect just if i can get the engine itself in easily enough.

don't do it, difficult to chip, camchain prone to failure which takes hpfp with it, and ihi turbo that fails a lot

The yank MK5's came with this engine from 2008 onwards or something so I'm guessing it should do. Probably best posting on a yank forum about it  :happy2:

you swapping because you have 100k miles?

id just take it to a tuner, make sure EVERYTHING was working as it should and then KO4 it.

I've heard mixed reports on the TSI/EA888.

A friend in the business (VAG contractor) says the EA888 is not a patch on the older EA113 engines (AXX & BYD respectively) which is massively over engineered as we already know. The TSI is a lot cheaper to build and is therefore not as bomb proof. I also remember JonnyC mentioning that VWR have blown a few up too.

But, conversely, I have seen in one of the VW magazines that the TSI responds very well to tuning and (apparently) quite safely.

danish is right though, the chain driven cams are certainly not as infallible as people seem to think. I stand to be corrected, but AFAIK, the GTI EA888 variant still uses a K03, its Skodas that have the IHI unit.
