Title: Replica alloys
Post by: MR Pap on April 18, 2010, 10:35:29 am
Have seen some replica mk6 18" alloy wheels on eBay for £300 without tyres.

Now they looks he business, yet I'm not sure on the quality of replicas. What is the general thought about replicas, any nightmare stories?

Cheers

I have bought a few sets of reps now for various different cars. They have all been fine. The quality of the BMW reps I bought for my last Beemer was excellent and they were actually lighter than the standard wheels. The paint finish was a little thin, but didn't cause me a problem.

I currently have RS6 reps on my GTI and the quality is excellent and they certainly don't feel any heavier than standard Monzas (but I haven't actually weighed these yet).

Overall I think I have had 4 or 5 sets of reps and all of them have been better quality than the TSW blades I had a good few years ago. They bent just looking at them!

well this is what I am worried about, they look the part but realllllllly don't want to be pulling away and all of a sudden the wheels buckle!

Which set are they fella?
I've got a set of reps on there atm. Bought them, never fitted them and decided I want reps. Two reasons really, one - getting bolts/locking nuts for them is too much hassle and more expense and it's also something that I don't know much about and secondly, - they're obviously heavier and don't have the hollow technology.

They look great finish wise and are wider (8J) but overall I wouldn't really recommend reps if you're bit of a purist about your GTI like me

Was a nice cost cutting idea but ultimately it sort of backfired. I think genuine ones are the way to go for me personally.

Err, any tyre fitter I have ever been to will sell you wheel nuts! Halfords even sell them too.

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss reps on weight grounds... as mentioned above, my last set were lighter than the originals they were copying.

Probably the case Garth, I just can't be rassled with getting the size and dimensions, ringing round for prices etc...
They're not that cheap for what they are anyway compared with second hand sets and therefore I'm scouting for a set of BBS Monza II's so I can get them refurbed to a similar finish. At least then I'll be safe in the knowledge they're genuine.

Certainly the ones I have for sale aren't light and that's comparing them to my genuine Audi Split S-Line wheels, which are around 13kg each. Those are in the loft so I've had experience shifting them around and there was a noticeable difference.

It seems you got some good reps and I didn't, simple as that

Thanks for the info lads, the ones I am looking are practicaly the mk6. Gti. 18" with black inserts. I must admit you tend to get what you pay for, and when one of the real deals cost the same as four reps with tyres you have to ask hmmmm why so cheap!?

None the less still in two minds, I'll ask what weight they are and compare them to my 17"

Were the huffs the black ones for £650?

^ Mine weighed around 16/17kg I think. That's probably a ball park dimension for most of your ebay reps, barring the good ones that Garth got his hands on for example if they were light.

Is it an independent seller or an ebay shop the ones you're looking at Mr P?

I haven't weighed my current ones yet, but my BMW reps were 11.5kg (18x9) compared to 11.8kg standard (18x8.5).
I don't imagine my current ones will be lighter than standard, but they don't 'feel' much heavier

17kg is a pretty heavy wheel  :surprised:

Yeah they're not great, hence above posts
They're not this side of 15kg, put it like that. That's only direct comparison to my Sline Splits though.

aw right just a quick note..  i had 18" rs6's on my previous car audi a4 which i bought new but were reps with cheap tyres and had endless probs with the tyres going flat some times instantlly on the move which hapaned twice and the tyre broke off the bead !!!!!! had rims sealed but still never worked, put on brand tyres pirrelli and prob was solved... just to let you know

Thanks for all the replys, they are from an eBay shop digital alloys or something. I have pirelli's at the mo, and the grip is fantastic yet still get sh1t loads of wheel spin, so crappy tyres are a no no!

How much do you think my existing 17" with the pirrelies would fetch, they are completely scratch and scuff free!

The company got back to with a weight aprox 10kg, now I'm assuming that's per wheel. What do we recon, is that about right or are the bullsh1ting me?

Seems a bit light? Aren't genuine ones 13kg?
If they are then I'd question the quality if they're not hollow reps. Must be using either a light or not so good quality metal?

You could have mine for £295

I'll PM you the link Tony if that's cool?

They're 18x8J reps with the shadow finish, like on the MK6.
It's a well done finish on them tbh but I simply want genuine ones so I've put these on ebay.

I'd love to Steve, but yours are out of my price range. Really I should get my two worst ones refurb'd.
Unfortunately the car is costing me a fortune, still with a few problems I have to spend money on so the wheels are taking a back seat for a while. :sad1:

Think of me if you get desperate though :happy2:
