Hi All, has anyone done either of these?
I have some LED lights that i fit for the number plate bulbs and they turn on but then turn back off again and give a warning of the bulbs not working. I'm guessing its because they dont draw enough current to register and it thinks they've failed and turns off the power to them.
Has anyone fixed this in some way?
Also, has anyone tried replacing the puddle lights in the mirrors with LED's? I havent tried to yet in case i get the same thing happen with them as i am with the number plate replacement LED's but they deffo need doing as the normal bulbs look awful with the Xenon's on when turning the car off.
Any info appreciated :)
-
You need to either add a resistor or purchase the ones with em already on so you dont get the bulb out light come on. Do a search on flea bay there are quite a few on there now. HIH
-
Ah ha, ok, i'll try find some resisted versions.
Next noob question, what type are they? I had some C5W's but they were a bit long compared to the standard bulbs, altho they fit, they stretched open the holder a bit much and wondered if there are some better fitting ones?
Cheers

this thread should help you mate http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,10114.msg162554.html#msg162554
-
Ah yeh, forgot about that thread.
Does anyone know the type of bulb in the mirrors to save me pulling them apart to have a look? Hopefully its an easy access from underneath job or is it move involved?
Its dark out now and easier to pick peoples brains
-
I bought a set from ebay that i put into my puddle lights what a load of rubbish £25 for a set of bulbs that would only work sometimes :booty:
if anyone has bought some bulbs that will def work with the puddle lights and are the bright white colour with no bulb out warnings please do tell
cheers
scott
-
Scott, how do you get to the bulbs in the mirrors? Do you have to take much apart to get at them?
I just had a quick look at the car expecting to find a small screw holding on the cover but it seems not.

iirc you fold the mirror back towards the front of the car and there is a screw holding the bulb unit in place, just take the screw out and pull that sucka out
-
i just got some normal cheap wedge led bulbs for my puddle lights (the same type as the sidelights), they have been in there since november and i havent had any trouble yet, there a nice white colour too
I will try and find what make they were tonight
-
Sounds good, thanks Jabbalad, then i can order both pairs at the same time :)
-
Right then, this is the bulb in my mirror puddle lights
What type is it please?
The housing says 13.5v and 6W on it for the rating i presume, there is writing on the bulb itself but its faded away and become unreadable
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fg137%2Flagerstars%2FMirrorBulb.jpg&hash=6cdf2a338f8bff451ab366db938e0c7399ac770f)
-
W5W I would've thought
http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/501-W5W-LED-Bulbs/
-
Perfect thanks, that looks like the right thing, from looking at the faded print on the bulb i'd have said it was W6W but W5W looks possible too.
And finally one last question, do they need to be the type that shouldnt give an error or will the bog standard LED ones work?
-
I have checked with a vee dub specialist and apparently they are not monitored by the ecu. Having some fitted professionally to my Ed 30 on thurs and I will report back with a result. I did buy both types just incase. will also ask em to take some fitting photos :happy2:
-
Coolio, i'll hold off til then, fitting them should be a 5 min job for both.
I did wonder if the ECU would monitor them or not given they only operate once the car is turned off so you wont be in the car to get a warning lol
Once you report back i can order the right ones
Cheers
-
they come on every time you open the door, regardless of if the engine is running or not. You will be fine buying any L.E.D bulbs (in the correct fitment) off fleabay as like the others have said they dont throw a light up warning. I bought some cheapy ones and they never miss a beat and look spot on

those number plate lights are the ones i bought and they stopped working after a few weeks, another guy on the forum got them from that ebay seller and had the same problem. If you find they stop working email the seller as he does give refunds because he knows some keep breaking.
-
Sorry to bump the tread guys but can these led's be used as sidelights?
-
The ones you'll need will be the ones that say they wont give CANBUS errors otherwise they wont draw enough power and the CANBUS will think they're dead and flag a bulb fault AFAIK.
