Hi all,
Need some advice on wether its possible to fit the MFSW with paddles to a DSG car with standard steering wheel and at what cost for retrofit.
What modifications/coding are needed for the retrofit so I can link up my new RNS510 to it?
Any advice and coments welcome.
Lee.

BUMP!
-
It's definitely possible to do the retrofit, but it's not one for the faint hearted...
This (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2938601) is from a US forum so part numbers may be different but it should give you an idea of what is required to do the actual retrofit.
A MFSW can be picked up from eBay for about £200 but the other bits (slip ring, airbag harness, controller, etc.) will be also have to be sourced and I'm not sure about exact pricing on those...

:happy2:
Thanks for the link mate already had alook at that post, just trying to find what parts are needed to do this retrofit.
BTW my car is a 2008 gt sport with dsg, midline but newly aquired RNS510.

As far as I know, DSG cars are only in need of the buttons. The wiring should be there, but not sure if that only applies to GTIs.
-
How would I know if I have the right module for the MSFW and paddles?
Can I access it by Vagcom by any chance.
Thanks for the replies but keep them coming please.

D'oh I must've missed that you had DSG in your original post... sorry!
When you say you have a "standard steering wheel" I take it you still have the paddles? If so then as I understand it you will have everything you need other than the button panels.
That sounds like a win but in actuality getting just the buttons isn't the easiest of tasks. Dealers want about £90 for each side! If you're lucky you'll be able to source a set from eBay (German listings are your best bet) but it's not an easy task. Richn83 was looking at getting some as a Group Buy (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,12387.msg197315.html#msg197315) -- might be worth seeing how he's getting on as it's been quiet on that front for a while.

As Damien says if you have the paddles then you will already have the right controller, and slip-ring for the MF buttons, I dont think they were standard on the GT (correct me if im wrong) did yours come with the paddles?
Not had much luck on finding someone with a group of buttons yet, the previous guy hasnt responded to my emails. I have been keeping an eye out for some more coming up but no luck as yet. :sad1:
Lee if you go post up on the group buy thread I started I will post once I find a good reasonably priced source! :happy2:
-
I don't have paddles on my steering wheel, probably not the right controller module either.
How much is controller if mine is not suitable? will have a look in that group buy.
-
I havent looked into the cost and work involved in replacing the slip-ring and controleer as I have the paddles, I know that JPC put a MFSW in his GT TDI, not sure if he did a write up on it, some of the links below might help you figure it out....
http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,12402.0.html (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,12402.0.html) you should be able to get the part number off the steerign wheel control module.
This thread might also be useful....

Richn83
Thanks for the info above had a read just now, gona have a good think if its worth the hassle.
-
No problem, it does seem like a lot of hassle, it maybe a good long term project, if you figure out the part-numbers and just see what comes up in the for sale section and ebay get a bit cheap here and there. Glad your enjoying your RNS510 though, they really are top! :jumpmove:
-
Your best bet maybe to get a new steering wheel with paddles. They come up once in a blue moon.

It seems I might have to keep an eye out on fleabay, I wonder how much they are at the stealers.
Might have to get friendly with the parts man then!
-
Yep that's the best bet. There was someone selling one just a couple of months ago on the forum. Why not put up a wanted post?

An update finally got an MFSW with paddles from fleabay but even better a MK6 version.
Scanned my car for SWCM finding that its one ending with BR which meant I had to buy one ending in CH.
My slip ring was the correct one so saved some £'s notes there,so all there was to do was fitting it.
I pulled the negative battery terminal off and proceeded to the SW cowling.
Since I had taken the steering wheel cowling of before to see wether the slip ring was compatibile it was pretty straight forward to do this process again.
Next came the airbag coming off and a M12 spline to unwind the SW, no problems there, swapped the SWCM over with the CH version plugged it in.Attatched the MK6 SW and plugged the connectors for airbag and buttons and replaced the airbag into the SW.
Reconnected the -ve terminal and proceeded with the coding of the SWCM,at first the volume buttons only worked but found out after a scan that the rns 510 wasn't coded properly.
Once thats done all the buttons that are meant to work all work including the paddles.
Went for a drive to try the paddles out and wow what a joy having
extra control on gear changing and the RNS 510,totally reccomend this mod.
I would like to thank the guys on here for the help, you know who you are!
:happy2:
I've no pics yet but they will follow shortly.
PS what mods next BT and RVC maybe?????

HHHHMMMMM !!!
I like MK6 wheel in MK5 !!!
:congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
-
Its nicer to hold than the standard GT wheel and the extras like the buttons and the fun factor from playing with the paddles....makes me feel like a 10 yr old in a toy shop at xmas again! :jumping: :jumpmove:
-
Mate it really does look better than the mk5 wheel
-
That steering wheel looks fantastic!
How do the paddals work, I guess you still need to knock the gear selector over to manual first?
-
No you can override the auto selection if, for example you wish to overtake. Use the paddle to select your gear. Once done, you can hold the right paddle to switch back to Auto, or it will revert back after about 20seconds. Truly, the best of both worlds :happy2:

Thanks mate 2nd best mod so far and yes it does the gear selection just as LouCyffer said.

H4rdy, my car is a 2008 GTI DSG, and the MF buttons went on plug & play, no coding required. MortyGTTDi did the business for me in no time at all.
-
Looks way cool, so ALL the buttons work?
Is your car a mk5 then or mk6?
Hhhhhmmm if thats a mk5 which it looks like, and ALL the buttons work, this is my next upgrade.
I have DSG with paddles already so should be straight forward.
Any specific coding required?
J
Its a MK5 ,the buttons that work are the volume +,-,left and right ,mute ,up and down on the midline .The other buttons that aren't working 'cos I don't have bluetooth and the full highline cluster.
Hope that would clarify things abit.
