Evening All,
The small fruit man has been working very hard coming up with some new and fresh ideas for our forum stickers as the current one hasn't really been flying off the shelfs :sad1:
So what do we all think of this as a new alternative to the current design: -

Tbh.. I'm not sure about the text tbh. I can see the stencil thing fitting in with the army badge thing, but I'm not sure about that either

I think this one is a bit fussy and hard to read, sorry VC. :ashamed:

I was actually going to suggest a round sticker. Maybe vw in the center and the site address around the outside. Kinda tax disc sized! :driver:

the hard part is having a sticker thats got some design to it rather than just being a web address. the stripes is merely an idea but incorporated a design and the address at the same time involved. Be hyper critical as its only an idea :popcornsoda:
nothing wrong with the original, other than those that like it have bought it and you are in the minority as it simply doesnt sell
like Tfsi_Mike says, if you dont own a MK5 GTI but another vag or a MK6 but still a forumite then a straight web address doesnt sit right
but to take away the www. and the .co.uk and you simple state a vehicle with it not a forum which is kinda the point
with the idea of pleasing the majority not the minority i'd be keen to see what others can do with it :party:
doesnt have to look pretty as i can smarten things up if need be, all ideas looked at :happy2: :popcornsoda:

....Exactly my thoughts too - The upside down "co" looks like a mistake because it's the only one. And if you put any of the other words upside down it will be both difficult to read easily and look very contrived.
Otherwise it's extremely distinctive and very easily recognisable from a distance. Very original too. I absolutely love it but hate the upside down bit.

It's very Dubber and up-to-date. The other ideas people are suggesting so far are soooo conventional and boring. Why do you think my car doesn't carry this forum's sticker? Dullsville, man!

EDIT:
Use a less 'military' typeface than utility stencil? A sans serif though. Rounded corners so less sharply sargeant stripes?

Consider this, people:
You're on the road and you see another GTI/Golf or tastefully modded Octy or Cupra (that rules a lot of you out :evilgrin:).. You can instantly recognise that 3-strip logo from a distance without having to climb into the other car's boot to read whether it says Mk5GolfGTI.co.uk or GTIGolf.co.uk or whatever.
Pass a car going in the opposite direction and you'll recognise it as another member at a glance.
Recognise it on a car at a distance in a car park.. Need I say more?

The biggest issue I have is the long URL. Is it not possible to have a shorter URL that then forwards to this one?
A shorter URL would also make it easier to style into a badge.
I completely see RR's POV. A characteristic design that means you can spot another forumite from a distance. Or perhaps a forum

A passing thought:
How about simply rotating the VC logo 90º so it no longer has the 'sarge' associations for some people? It would still remain as highly visible and distinctive.
But still change the stencil font because that has strong military associations.

....Whichever forum sticker we end up with, not everyone will be happy with its design. Unfortunately it's virtually impossible to satisfy everyone's tastes and desires.
P.S.- VC, who I think handles sticker production and supply, recently went through a period when he was incapacitated. We are all extremely relieved that his health is now largely restored, or at least becoming so. He'll always be a bit crazy though, and we love him for it.

I like the fact that it immediately shows who you are as a forum,unlike someone having to read the original sticker whilst on the move for e.g..I do agree with others on the font but as a design I,m happy with the way VC is thinking on a logo theme..Maybe as a collective we could come up with design for just a logo rather than the whole URL.A bit like VC,s cherrys sticker,I see that somewhere i,ll know its him.. :rolleye:

What about a Monza Wheel in black with a red GTI in the middle then the forum address round the tyre?
Could do an edition 30 one with a pescara as well.

Bear in mind, its only supposed to outline the concept. Colours, sizing etc is all still TBC as it were! ;)

As previously stated I think one of the problems is that people without a GTI but with a Golf or similar (like me) wouldn't buy it if it is emphasising the GTI part. I understand it's a GTI forum but I know a lot about the GTI and contribute a lot and wouldn't mind having the forum sticker on, plus there are quite a few members with other cars. But I'd feel stupid with a sticker that said GTI when my car clearly isn't. Food for thought :smiley:

....A very valid point. The sticker represents the forum/community and not the specific car. The web address within the 'logo' sticker is sufficient to give some idea of what we are all about.
That's why I still prefer VC's original chevron design - It just needs to develop a bit further away from the military associations. VC? Where are ya, buddy?

....Yes it started out as a forum for GTI's and it still fundamentally is. But it has organically evolved (something to do with bigger cocks joining :evilgrin:) and it's a site/community which warmly welcomes those on a different 2.0T FSI etc platform.
What does SteveP think about this?

mine is merely an idea, attempting to add design to an address which is the only way you can include non gti's imho... even if its not in chevron form. changing the font within the chevron is easy btw and would seem to be the general throng of opinion, but not everyone likes that design
to answer other statements - it is a gti forum yes
but its also a community :innocent:
straight text is straight text, no design to that at all, but whichever way the masses go is the direction it heads
more opinions needed for a new design, more input from those who havent commented too :happy2:

I know its a gti forum but theres a hell of a lot of other tfsi varients and it would make it easier to spot other forum members that dont have a GTi with a universal forum sticker design that kinda incorporates everyone :grouphug:.
I like the idea of the Military stripes and it would be easy to spot a fellow forum member which is kinda the point in the sticker right.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a forum badge/logo. Not necessarily stripes but maybe something else that's easily recognisable and smart.
Hell I'd settle for the military stripes if I didn't think it meant my car would be targetted by pikey scum.

A lot of army dudes get jumped on by pikeys because they're in the army. Rather than admire these men, they're ridiculed and looked upon as scum. I don't want someone thinking my car belongs to a military man and hence gets trashed.

x2, too much Dubkorps in it and also not very readable.
Uk-mkvs.net is quite a sharp logo to be honest, but a bit hard to make out.
Will have a think about an easy-to-recognise yet readable logo.

....Though it's distinctive as an overall shape, doesn't it suggest a community who are more into the uber slamming and spacing scene, which many of us aren't.

Robin - It doesnt have to be a outline of a slammed and spaced Golf you could even have 2 options one slammed and spaced as per the pic above or one with a normal stance. The above pic is the closest i could find to what i had in mind :happy2:
Stealth - Isnt this a MK5 forum???? I understand that there are members on here without MK5's but a majority do own MK5's and imo if your gona put a MK5GolfGTI forum sticker on it a pic of a Golf isnt gona matter. :wink:

Design by concensus is never a good idea as you cannot please everyone, no matter how you try.
So far military insignia is out and generic MKV pic is out, so what do we do?
How about a competition, like the monthly photo one and then get peeps to vote? The winner is the one with most votes. The only concession would be that VC would have to vet the designs to see if they are viable. :happy2:

Fine tune it by using all capitals and a more extended font to better fill the spaces and hence increase legibility.

Nath, I should have clarified my words about the use of the Union Jack. I meant to say that its use often looks cheap and tacky - it depends entirely on how and where its used imo - Just as Hedge has pointed out about the St.George's. Personally I think that if you are sporting a national flag you should be officially representing that nation or flying an actual flag itself. Me, I'm of mixed blood and don't feel British anyway, especially when I'm travelling abroad even on a UK passport.

Just tweak it with a matching angled slash on its lefthand end imo.
Also liking the concepts of the others.. Especially the 'speech' bubble idea.. Tweak to make the 'pointer' a bit bigger and more obvious.

I'm not mad about mixing two typefaces, but it looks OK I guess. Would be better if it was the real GTI font.

are we deciding on this one then?
so colour wise the text stays white (unless on black) and then different coloured banner choices? is that right?
the design itself will cut fine, twin colour vinyl one layered over the other with a solid white bottom layer and a colour layer with text cut out placed over the top
that way all combinations are easy to create... red/black/blue/pink/green/white/yellow etc etc and with so much solid colour theres no reason a carbon fibre version cant be done if people wanted it too :wink:

I've done these in Illustrator so I can supply an EPS with text converted to outlines if you want.
Regarding the GTI type, I'm almost sure this must be a custom font. I've exhausted my collection of slab-serifs and non are quite right. Sure not everyone is going to be so anal about that but I like things to be right!

If so that's not the GTI font, check the bar on the T for example. The font I've used, ITC Lubalin Graph is closer to the original imo.
The other text is Helvetica Neue. Each character has been kerned individually.

I'm not mad about mixing two typefaces, but it looks OK I guess. Would be better if it was the real GTI font.
....I think you should use the same 2 fonts as in the forum/site's header, but the "co.uk" would be same font size as in the sticker design proposal.
The slightly sloping letter "M" side will sit better too, imo.
Offering the stickers in sets of a pair (left & right side applications) would be good too. All IMO.

I'm not sure that a rounded sans like VAG works particularly well with a slab-serif. You just have two characterful fonts that contrast poorly imo. I realise that the sticker has to reflect the design of the site though. Perhaps the site header can change to reflect the new identity?

All the lowercase text is the same size. Changing it all to lowercase will introduce a descender on the G of Golf, so you'll immediately lose the nice block feel to the text.

dude, i know its not the GTI font as found on the car...it is however the font used at the top of the site therefore matching the website banner to the sticker which was the original idea :happy2:
if need be i can simply scan the actual gti badge to be 100% faithful and jobs done, but it wouldnt match the banner on the website anymore. depends how closely related things are needed to be
the design seems hot to trot, but we could spend weeks getting everyone happy with the nitty gtitty :laugh:
i can have this ready for sale very quickly....
decide on your fonts, or not (scanned badge) and bat it back and forth then once everyones agreed the bossman/mods can nod it and were away :smiley:

Was just saying, I like Andrew's font and layout, and the only change would be to make the GTI font the "real" GTI font if possible. The forum banner could be updated to reflect this (and also to semi-coincide with the new server!).

Ahh yes. what I mean is to have all the text the same height with no ascenders/descenders. Slightly smaller than the GTI text maybe?

I think it sounds like a decision needs to be made as to whether the new sticker conforms strictly to the current site design (in which case replicating the current Mk5GolfGTI.co.uk type in the chequered shape would be the sensible thing to do), or whether the site can adopt a new visual identity by changing the header design incorporating one of the designs with stronger typography.

forum relation aside for one second, community wise the design being the web address on a background rather than standing alone still wont incorporate those without golfs, would still be nice to be able to include them

I have no artistic merit whatsoever so I won't even try to make this but as far as incorporating all of our "brethren" in to a logo, how about a silhouet of the Golf, A3, Leon and Octy in a sort of front-side-on view with each car overlapping the next... if that makes sense?
I know that the engine from the GTI is in more than just those cars but that should get the idea that it's a VAG community across and if the Golf is the topmost silhouet then it still makes sense with the forum address. Whether it'd be instantly identifiable on the other hand... probably not! :wink:

have to say i agree with Jay, the "quick" idea Andrew came up with i think looks very good and i would certainly buy one, have to say I've never been a fan of the VAG Rounded font and although its not my place to say i think maybe a new design for the site or even just a new banner would go down well i think. with the site now developing a new independance server wise maybe its something we should consider :smiley:
i dont get time always to read everything but once i got home i was very interested in this thread and i feel that everyones input is great. even robins! well actually robins ideas are often right up there when he was a designer for a number of years but i prefer the original Andrew did to the slanted look im afraid! :P
there are enough talented people on the site i feel that if we put our heads together without to much blah blah crappola inbetween then the world is our lobster. :drinking:

hmm i work very closly to a lot of companies similar to yours but have to say my company is way ahead interms of design and ideas! :P
no seriously i work for a marketing / design / artwork / repro house / printers and i know exactly where you are coming from. we all work very closely together with a multitude of other companies. by the way im just a lowly machine operator but i dabble in design and artwork for the company and friends, i have a lot to learn though :happy2:

I think that a range/ selection would be an excellent idea, having a choice of say 2 or 3 designs. i'm sure everyone would agree that one needs to incorporate the web address to spread the message of this great forum. :happy2:

I have to say that for me there's only one winning design here that's been posted. Possibly two, but no more.
Judging by many of the designs which have been suggested so far and the thinking expressed in posts, a democratic vote on which one isn't necessarily going to result in the best from the point of view of an effective, clearly communicated design which is also easily reproduced.
Sorry but I'm just being very honest in my opinion - There's no point in doing otherwise.

I like the two black and grey roundels (both with the VW logo and with the Wolfsburg logo) as well as the "racing stripe".
Here's a thought -why not make the chequer at the end into a reverse of the .:R one?

yes :smiley: also it uses bleeded colouring which cant be done with cut vinyl (unless a bleed coloured vinyl is used but unnecessarily expensive) that would have to be printed, but VW guard that design very very hard and i've already been slapped once with a copyright court case :laugh: (not from VW though)
the top left would need 3 colours as opposed to the 2 colours the rest use
and the one with the white background would have to be done quite large else the text is too small to cut
other than that all of those are doable :smiley:
(less colours = less cost = less to buy and more funds to forum) :smiley:
hopefully more people will add some designs to then maybe put them all into their own thread and run a poll, the successful ones with the highest votes could then go into production?

For what my opinion is worth, I am liking the top right design by Andrew seems to be going down well with the most part of member on here aswell.
Would it be possible, to have a variety of background colours as red maybe limits it to specific colours of car.
also maybe having the GTI lettering just in red with the rest of the forum address in another colour?? obviously will depend on how easy this is to do and how neat it will look.
Just my opinion, but been at Mr Cherry for a while now for some forum stickers and hes told me to hold off til the new ones come around...... So chop chop, and lets get a decision made and some stickers made up, yeah!!! :P

I made a very rough one to test the cuts... currently sitting on aparoons ride to see what it looked like before i put the time into the artwork... it doesnt look pretty but gives a good indication of what it looks like (the checkered ended one) - he does have a pic, has he not pm'd you?

All colours can be offered, all combinations, internals and externals across the different designs. I'll do a comprehensive thread on it :happy2:
Baring in mind here i wont be making any money making these its purely to raise forum funds, more than happy to do it too, however to be able to do this i need to do a run of each design in a selection of colours and applications. If i do them one at a time as ordered i'll be spending all my time working for free and that wont pay the bills
some will like one style others wont and we'll keep spinning around in circles and this thread will still be ongoing in a months time....
..or, a decision can be made, styles 100% chosen, set in stone and i get can them produced and up for sale :smiley:

1 - The round black one.
2 - The chequered strip with parallel angles at each end.

Different typography though.
Personally I'd go for one idea, the stripe with a checkered slash. I think this can exist in a few different variations to suit different applications, i.e slash to the right, slash to the left, slash at both ends. Essentially you're still working with the same brand, just providing a different logo for different uses.
