i know the sand in the desert plays massive havoc with the air filters on our vehicles out in the middle east. sap all of power, and need blowing out with compressed air, id imagine the ash wuld be even worse as it is finer.

Woah. The red lightning looks terrifying.
I imagine the very very fine ash would quickly cause failure of the engine, especially as it penetrated into lubricating liquids and bearings, thereby seizing them.
Remember that automotive tolerances aren't as tight as aerospace tolerances, and this stuff is bad juju for aviation.
