Title: Black GTi/ED30 with Black Ultraleggeras
Post by: mackit on April 25, 2010, 10:05:20 pm
Hi Guys,

What are people's thoughts of black alloys on a black GTi/ED30?  Too hardcore?

On my previous white mini i had black wheels.  I think it's a colour combo that works well but am unsure if black on black is a little too much.

Quite like the OZ Ultraleggera's as a 2nd set of alloys.  I'd stick with 18s but i think they either do 7 or 8 width.  Would it be better to opt for the 8 width in terms of grip?

Does anyone have any pics of a GTi/ED30 with these on; preferably a black GTi/ED30?

Anyone owned a set and would recommend them?

You shouldn't really be asking a bunch of strange men on tinternet what you should do. If you like it then do it, its not like your putting on 22in chrome spinners.

For you to pull off any look you have got to be confident in your own choices.  :drinking:

I know...i tried asking a bunch of strange women and they replied by asking whether i wanted to carry my balls home in a hat!  :scared:

Agree...agree...but i pose the question because i'm a little unsure.  I also welcome anyone's experience of whether they tried this and it didn't quite work, perhaps titanium might be better, blah de blah blah.  :rolleye:

Pics would be good as well if anyone has them.  :happy2:

Like these:

Quite shocked at how much cheaper Team Dynamics are than OZ alloys.  Would make a good second set at half the price.

For some reason - and don't ask me to justify this opinion! - I really don't like the red-lipped, or silver-lipped rim on black alloys... sorry for those who have it like that!

Go for it though, it's your car; do as you wish.  :happy2:

Thanks gents, I'm working on the H&R Touring Cup Kit for a summer improvement.

Yes, the 1.2's - I find that the red lip doesn't work with GTI's usually.

Stunning!  :happy2:

Are those 18s with the car lowered?

Hopefully someone can clarify but i presume, other than simple tracking, you don't have to use anything additional when putting 18x8 alloys on the GTi/ED30?  OZ Ultraleggeras will surely clear the brakes?

....All (as far as I know) OZ Racing wheels have exceptionally good brake clearance. OZ principally design and manufacture wheels for racing cars and have much experience.

Also, a lightweight wheel such as OZ delivers much improved driving feedback.

Am i right in saying that the ED30 is reduced by a further 15mm over the GTi?

Does anyone happen to know how far the car can be lowered before speed bumps become a problem?  Is it fair to say that if lowering is an issue but you want improved stability through corners, FSD Dampeners would offer a good compromise?   :rolleye:

I run both 7.5's and 8's and with the offset of the 8's being 44 (BBS VZ's) I do get a fair bit of rubbing under compression. Nothing at all with the 7.5's fitted.  :happy2:

I think the 18x8 OZs come with 45 offset.  I would imagine something similar would happen then a per your BBSs.

I think this TD Pro Race 1.2s come in 50mm offset so this is very close to what i believe is 51 mm for the Pescara's.  Naturally, i presume the 18x8 would be less prone to rubbing.

....I'd say that you don't want to lower any more than mine is regarding speed bumps. But mine has been setup by Volkswagen Racing for best handling and not to a specific drop measurement. Also, my OSIR front splitter reduces frontal clearance. My car manages 99% of speed bumps providing I go real sloooow over them and some at an angle. Multi-storey indoor carparks with ramps are a total no-go area for me.

I had KoniFSD's for a long time and their main benefit was taking the 'sharp' edges off the ride by smartly changing themselves to either harder or softer. It's the aftermarket anti-roll bars which helped the stability.

Welcome to the slippery slope of modding!

Personally I agree with the majority, black on black does look very slick, however I think for it to work the car needs to be kept clean and the tyres shined with a detailing product.  :happy2:

And black is probably the most difficult colour to keep looking clean. I prefer the metallic blacks personally.
