My air con seems to have packed up ;-(.
07 golf gti
It was never great when I first got the car but now I just get a warm breeze even on low setting. There is also a high pitch noise coming from the unit every now & then which stops when the car is stationary. I have noticed that my fan at the back of the radiator makes a racket at idle too - any ideas?
I hear condensor unit is a common fault?
-
May be low on gas - get it in to a garage to test it.
The local garge i use has air con servicing kit that can pump dye gel in and preasurise it to see if there are any leaks. if not they then top it up. cost about £50
-
Is the fan spinning when the air con is on?
-
cheers for the advice fellas
The fan is spinning when the air con is on yes - but it sounds like a spitfire at idle which I never noticed before....

80% chance it's your pump gone bad.
read this link and use my pictures to identify you make of pump, if you got the bad make, source one on Ebay.de. by far the cheapest and the same pump as VW uses, AND it's not a refurbed one.
Also make sure the garage cleans the WHOLE system before fitting the new pump.
There is a TSB on this fault. :happy2:

I nearly cried when I looked at the cost of a new compressor! - looks like it is going to be a warm summer!
My warranty rang out 9 days ago ;-(
cheers for info dudes
-
Get it in the garage mate, VW replaced mine when the car was a few months outside the warranty. They replaced the compressor for free and contributed 50% to labour so it came out at £174.

Going to book it in for tomorrow ;-)
I just need that new compressor - my dad is a mechanic albeit with Ford so should be able to fit & gas it for me...
Ebay band here - how much is that compressor going for?

I bought from this guy, excellent service, and in total it cost me 25% of the price from VW Denmark.
Sorry forgot the link, and you want a Sanden pump:

The link is to an ebay search, but they are all about the 200E mark. HTH :happy2:
-
Thanks mate - that's not so bad ;-)
still a bit of wedge tho' - hopefully my main dealer will see me through, prepared to dish out some doughnuts if they can help me!
-
9 days out of warranty lets hope there feeling kind! You didnt happen to mention anything to them at the last service etc, that you can go back on
-
The car hasn't been due a service yet under my ownership - it's on longlife but I have changed the oil & oil, pollen & air filter myself.
Next service isn't due for another 4k & I've had the car 12 months...
-
Hmmm, well hopefully and Andrewparker says they will sort you out with a deal, maybe the promise or booking of the service might help the service manager get his head round it  anyway good luck :drinking:
-
Rang vw - basically as my car is 9 days out of Warranty I will have to pay £69.99 for them to investigate the problem & also it wont be covered under warranty :sad1:
-
I would call VW customer services direct see what they say.
-
What Scotta said, and then at least see if they will give you the 69.99 off the final bill if they do find out whats wrong, and you get them to fix it. Although that sounds ridiculous amount, unless they are going to do a full leak test/recharge! :surprised:
-
Small update - I located one of the shraeder valves on the piepwork to the air con & pushed it in with a key to see how much gas I had - hardly anything!
So getting the system re-gassed tomorrow before I do anything too drastic.
I hope I haven't mashed the clutch using it with hardly any gas....?
I located the compressor but could not quite see the label to identify which unit I have, will keep u posted ;-)
cheers all

Hope that fixes it, the biggest problem with low gas, and with not using it regularly (all Aircon) is that the gas carries around the lubrication for the seals so hopefully it will re-pressurise and you can cool down again :happy2:

You don't have to see the label on the pump; look at the side of the rimdriven whell that faces away from the pump, if all black you have xezel, if it has a non painted spring then Sanden :happy2: As per my pictures in the linked tread previously
