Right all, I would appreciate your thoughts/reassurance!
As some of you are aware, I recently bought myself a 2008 Edition 30, and have been more impressed than I ever thought I would be. It is just an excellent all round package, and certainly suits the type of daily journey I have.
However….. I have just one observation and I am really seeking some reassurance, as I am finding it unreasonably annoying! I have a slight noise at the clutch bite point, which is difficult to accurately describe. It is very intermitted, and only does it when pulling away from standstill (1st and reverse). I would describe is as a slight creak/warble (if that is a word!).
My local dealer has had the car for many days and cannot hear it, although they have inspected engine mounts etc as far as possible.
Now I know that as the clutch etc is all working faultlessly and the car still has 1 ½ years warrantee remaining I should really just forget about it. However, I ended up driving another ED30 today, and it did exactly the same (although just once over a long drive)!
Does anyone know the noise that I am hearing, and perhaps confirm that it is normal? It really needs the radio off or low the hear it.
Thanks all!

sorry, cant be of any help mate, i dont have an ed30 but my gti doesnt do it.
-
Thanks Joe...
After a little time on Google I have found a number of similar posts on various forums describing it as “a slight 'chugging' noise when at low revs at the biting point on the clutchâ€. This is probably a better description than my poor effort! It seems that it mainly affects ED30’s, possibly with no fix and assumed to be a characteristic ED30’s by dealers.
Would any fellow ED30 owners please let me know if their vehicles do something similar?
-
I believe this could down to the Dual Mass Flywheel, I am sure some others with the ED30 have had this done under warranty :happy2:
-
Steve is as ever correct :notworthy:
Mine exhibits the same 'feature', some dealers may change the whole setup if you complain enough.
I assume you dont have any other issues like clutch slip under WOT at 3000 rpm?
Its also a factor of how worn your engine mounts are and fitting ECS insert/VWR lower mount / full set of mounts can and does change how it feels.
Ultimately get your ED30 remapped, keep your fingers crossed and enjoy for x months/years but budget for a replacement clutch/flywheel/pressure plate when it eventually goes :signLOL:
-
Thanks for your reples..
So is it a sign of wear in the DMF? I have seen reports of news cars suffering from this 'feature'. I understand that when DMF's are worn it causes vibration etc. The two dealer that have had the car both deny that their is any fault.
I have no slip or any other issues at all (fingers firmly crossed).
-
Mine has done this from new, seems to be a DMF thing, i recently had a new DMF under warranty and a new clutch but noise is still there LOL, i just live with it now, i tried two other ED30's and they did it too although the owner didnt notice (must be numb nuts LOL)
There was a massive thread on a USA forum and some solved it by swopping out the DMF for a single piece one.
-
not necessarily a sign of wear imho , like 182_blue mine did it from new as well.
think about getting the insert / engine mount replacements :happy2:

It sounds like this could be a characteristic after all then. Why only ED30's then...?
What are these inserts then? OEM or after market? Did they help with yours?
Cheers!

I have heard some say the dogbone mount helps, PS as far as im aware its not just the ED30, as i said USA forums reported this and they dont get the edition 30
-
Ah right. So is the Dog Bone mount an OEM engine or gearbox mount or an after market bit of kit? Any info/threads available?

Here you go http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=393.0
its aftermarket but quite easy to do by all accounts
-
my ed 30 did this too and so did the s3 but not as much , fitted ecs dog bone insert to both and it stopped it :happy2:

Any downsides? Extra noise/vibration? Sounds like it is a mount issue then? Would you mind confirming that the old bush simply comes out (as if!) and the new part fits in? I am tempted to try an OEM first if that is the case...
-
the old bush doesnt come out , the ECS insert simply fills the holes/voids in the OEM mount
so you leave the OEM mount in place.
if you look at Robins review of the VWR lower mount
http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,5082.0.html
(which does replace the OE mount), you can see where the 'fingers' of the insert goes through)
Insert is a quick and easy way to improve things :happy2:
-
the ecs insert fits into the gaps in the original rubber bush to stiffen it up , not allowing as much movement , no downsides , some say slightly more vibration but tbh i cant feel any , awesome gti is the place to get them (the ecs one comes c/w a new bolt the newspeed one dont ) :happy2:

Thanks guys, just not sure that I want to do something that might cause a little vibration which no guarantee that it will fix the creaking noise!
-
i dont think you will notice any vibration difference , got to be worth a try cost about £35 takes minutes to fit

its not a big cost though
