Right. Enough of this
douche hipster aluminium-and-glass crowd posing while running shiny closed hand-holding operating systems.
Let's see some real computers here. There must be some people with decent machines on this forum.
This is the inside of my rig.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.static.flickr.com%2F2783%2F4103358001_aaa3f2e97b_b.jpg&hash=f50fe18c5ee4c68f79a0ec653106b6007a84b044)
I'm running an Intel Core i7 2.67GHz machine... overclocked to 3GHz. That's eight cores four physical cores and four hyperthreaded cores of juicy goodness, cooled by that mighty CoolerMaster V8 cooling tower.
That's backed up with 6GB of high-performance RAM from Corsair.
My gfx card is quite old these days; the GPU is an NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS with 512MB of DDR3, ably overclocked by BFG. Once I've stopped spending money on cars I might upgrade this. That's driving a pair of 22" Samsung Syncmaster flatscreens with a combined resolution of 3360x1050.

I've got 1TB of hdd space onboard over three drives (including a 74GB Western Digital Raptor spinning at 10,000RPM); and a NAS to which I've got a gigabit Ethernet pipe which has 2.5TB of space.
All of that's housed in a sweet black ally case made by Akasa, known as the "Raven".
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (I'll switcheroo to 64-bit after my exams to make better use of my RAM), and also got installations of Ubuntu, Kubuntu ('cause I wanted to play with KDE4, which is swish), and Debian to play with when I feel like.
Anyone else got a decent machine on here? Someone must do!

im still using this

That my dear Sy is Babbages Difference Engine (well replica methinks) and yes the Great Grandaddy doesn't quite cover it.

This hasn't exactly gone the way I planned it would go

It is indeed a replica of the Difference Engine No 2. Babbage never finished his first Engine and was working on the second Engine before abandoning that. Before he died he was working on an even further improved device, the Analytical Engine which was never built.
Now all we need is someone to post an image of a Turing machine...

Nice post Ian, iirc Babbage worked alot with IK Brunnel to prove that broad gauge railways were smoother and faster than narrow (standard gauge)
What a piece of clockwork engineering :notworthy: :notworthy:

I have a fairly decently specced PC.
250gb solid state HD for the operating system, 1TB hard drive, 2 x Nvidea graphics cards (768mb each), some posh soundblaster card, 24" Samsung lcd widescreen monitor, Altec lansing 5.1 sound system. Intel core i7 (not sure of speed!). 8gb fast ram. Bluray and DVD dual system.
I'll find exact specs when I'm at home.
Works lovely on Windows 7 64bit.
I have it hooked up through the media player for Iplayer and sky on demand too, so I can rummage through stuff at leisure. :happy2:

Okay, I'm going to try to help keep this thread on topic.
So, this is the desk in my study...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg203.imageshack.us%2Fimg203%2F9435%2Fdsc0934m.jpg&hash=33abf264d89d4bd8b6a59f6c9410eab122411c4d)
Funky wallpaper aside it looks pretty normal, but there are quite a few computers there, standard stuff first:
Dell Latitude E4300 (Win7) with Docking station on the left, then stacked up next to that is:
Dell Latitude D620 (Win7)
Dell Latitude XT2 Tablet (Win7)
Dell Latitude E4200 (Win7)
Dell Mini 10 (OSX)
On the right is this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg194.imageshack.us%2Fimg194%2F9177%2Fdsc0935d.jpg&hash=7d8c7159229326ec8bb48521220ec8013b723eff)
Mac Mini (upgraded with 2.33GHz Core2Duo and 320GB 7,200rpm drive plus external 1TB drive)
and these:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg263.imageshack.us%2Fimg263%2F7528%2Fdsc0937x.jpg&hash=63fb1b04a5a7e6d75ace1d3a48d7d1e97909a413)
D-Link DNS-323 NAS (2x2TB SATA drives plus external 500GB drive)
Dell Poweredge 840 (Linux)
However the most powerful machine is the one lurking under the desk:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F703%2Fdsc0948cvs.jpg&hash=8a9e569528c610b72d0da9595b445ecb48372338)

That's a Dell Poweredge T710 (running multiple VMs on VMware ESXi on an internal SD card)
2x Intel Westmere X5670 processors (2.93GHz, 6 cores, 12MB last level cache)
24GB DDR3 RAM (running at 1333Mhz)
4x 146GB 10k SAS drives (RAID 10)
2x 500GB 7k SAS drives (RAID 1)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg39.imageshack.us%2Fimg39%2F8578%2Fdsc0951p.jpg&hash=07df735077fca4b80c238557684c5161e92ea46c)

So, do I win a prize or something? Also, for the record I still think the most interesting thing in my study is the wallpaper
:P

you been trying to hack NASA or something wih that, jesus christ
-
Wow, mclovin, that's quite the setup you got there. I guess you're using the T710 as a server of some kind? That's definitely a beast of a machine, none of the consumer grade stuff manages to quite touch that. Some (lucky!) guys at work have similarly spec'd workstations that they use for CAD/CFD and stuff.
Out of interest, what's the tablet like? You're the first person I know of to own one.
...in this forum? this surprises you?
were only a couple of posts away from randomness or images of women
See! We got some sensible responses! Hurdy's rig is quite nicely spec'd too...
-
Yeah, the T710 is my primary server, it's fully virtualised as it's running VMware ESX and there are about 10 virtual machines running on it at the moment, a mixture of Windows Server and Linux builds. It needs some more drives though then I can retire the D-Link NAS once and for all. I mainly use it for testing and personal training as I need to keep well up to date with the Dell server management tools and different virtualisation platforms/management for work reasons (there is nothing better than actually using software for learning). The really sad thing is that I will probably end up with quite a few more servers running at home before the year ends, I just need board out the loft and make some room first...
The Latitude XT2 tablet is quite cool although I really have found very few reasons to use it apart from presentations, it really comes into it's own when used with Powerpoint 2010 and multiple wireless projectors. As for the whole touchscreen interface, it's great but the novelty wears off quite quickly and you end up rotating the screen and using it like a laptop most of the time, this is one of the reasons I won't be buying an iPad.
I should point out that the reason I have most of this stuff is because of my job, I'm not some sort of uber-hacker!

Another multiple Dell user! :notworthy:
I have 4 currently - admittably, all getting a bit long in the tooth!
A C521 based Media Center PC
A Dimension 9150 as a work station, dual display for CAD/Graphics work
Another Dimension 9100 somthing rebuilt as a media server with 2.5TB RAID1 storage
An Inspiron laptop
Oh and a little Dell netboot for remote desktop-ing into the torrent media-server and Media Center PC.
All still running XP because it just works! :ashamed:

Okay the bits I couldn't quite remember are....
Intel Core I7 940 2.98GHZ Quad Core CPU (although I remember them telling me that they had overclocked it to 3. something ghz)
2 x 500GB HDD configured in RAID 1
8GB 1600 DDR3 High Performance RAM
-
Mine used to be relatively decent until the new GeForce cards/CPU's were released. As you all know its pretty expensive to keep up-to-date with computers but here it is anyway.
I used it mainly for Counter Strike Source and simple Office work.
Antec 900 Case
MSI P35 Neo MBoard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz
3GB (3x1024) Corsair DDR2 XMS2 (Was 4Gb but damaged one when I rebuilt it. :ashamed:)
Gainward Geforce 512Mb 8800GT
Hiper PSU 580 Watt
Creative Soundblaster XtremeGamer
250Gb HDD (Store most things on the external)
Haven't used it in months therefore im looking to sell it but dont know where.
