Hey looking at gettin my first Gti soon and could do with some advice. I have found two cars inparticular one is a 2007 registerd car with a 56 reg and 29,000 miles and the other is 2006 on a 06 reg but with 22,000 miles. I was wondering for the inteeligent amongst you as to wether there would be much difference between the 2006 and 2007 cars in terms of standard parts issued by VW or common faults relating to the model. your comments and thoughts would be very welcome as im hoping for a good experice with my first Gti.
Thanks
Ross

Welcome to the forum Ross. :happy2:
your question lost any purpose when you directed it at the intelligent on here. You have seriously narrowed your market there. :rolleye: :signLOL:

Thanks for the welcome. I don't obviously know the site aswell as you do then haha  i retract... open to anyone !!! just thought it would be a bit of a specialist question.

Age has a lot more influence on the resale value of a car than mileage does. So if they're the same ££ I'd go for the 56.
-
Don't think there's much difference in the standard equipment between the 06 and the 07. Residual values can be based as much on condition as well as year.
Common faults will be the same - listen for a noisy timing belt tensioner from cold, and a 'tappy' almost Diesel sound (Sorry Derv owners!) from the engine when warm - all can be cured before collection if buying from a VW Dealer.
What sort of spec are the cars?
Consider the options fitted, Xenons, highline computer, armrest, 18'' Monzas and Leather seem to be the most popular options to have although most of these can be retro fitted for a price.
Are they privately advertised or Dealer? Any warranty/extended warranty included?
DSG or Manual?
Colours, and Price?
All personal preference really - Which one do you prefer?
Good luck with your purchase though!

Don't quote me on this but doesn't the 2006 Model year have blue tinted glass, rubber seal around rear side windows and a different speaker set up in the front doors these were removed on the 2007 cars to cut cost's :happy2:

Wow thanks for the detailed info, realy is amzing lol. here are the links for the two cars.

Wheels dont concern me too much as i will be lookin to change them for some Ch's  . What exactly does having a highline computer give me extra exactly? As for the rest i am very close friends with the owners of a VW dealer in my hometown of loughborough (Arthur prince) so gettin extra parts for retro mods shouldnt be and issue. Good to hear what you think.

Hi and welcome, I don't think there were any major changes from MY06 to MY07. I believe the 10 speaker setup was lost in the MY06. To be honest I doubt there's any difference between the two because they are both 56 plates and one could have just been registered later, the age between the two is minimal. Also a new model year usually occurs the year before so they're both probably MY07.
-
I would just get the one you like most, regardless of age/mileage... As long as it looks to have been well maintained you should be fine :driver:

Well - I have 10 speakers in my 2007 model year. I think the speaker massacre only occured on three door GTIs - 5 doors seemed to be unaffected. Or maybe the the Sat-Nag gave me back 10 of em.
One important change on the 2007 my was the aesthetic addition of silver knobs (oooo errr) on mainly the head units. Oh, it also seems that 2007 my gained some additional CAN-BUS modules - noteably the head units.

Sat-Nav comes with the 10 speaker system.

They both look like nice clean cars, but they are both poverty spec, I.e. no options.
And If i'm not mistaken, the second car claims to have 18" alloys, but they look like the 17"...
If you can, hold out for some of the more poplular extras - I really wish I had when I bought mine - it'll make the car nicer and easier to shift in a few years time.
It's all relative, but there's a general consensus that things like these are most desirable:-
18" Monza (sell? Fund the CH's),
RNS510 Sat-Nav,
Multi-Function Steering Wheel,
DSG,
Leather,
Xenons.

It's a bit of a balancing act - a lot of things can be added fairly easily after market the shouldn't put you off what could otherwise be a good car:
18" Monzas can be retro fitted
RNS-510 can be retro fitted (budget for the revised controller too)
Leather is over rated... Unless looked after well, will sag and put off future buyers. Unless you like it - ETTO
The best options to hold out for are DSG, Xenons (or Winter pack) and Highline:
With DSG, it's cheap and easy to add the MFSW if required as unlike the manual, the steering wheel is already wired for it (due to the paddles)
Xenons are very costly to retro fit properly. If you cant find a car with them, next best option is the Winter pack, as this will give you head light washers which you need for Xenons - and are the hardest bit to install. Then all you have to add as the lights and the levelling system, still not cheap but this is the easiest route to retrofit.
Finally Highline - again not impossible to retro fit, but the additional coding and control modules can bump up the cost very quickly.
The difficulty I was having finding a GTI to my spec was one of the reasons I gave and went for an R32 instead - you get so much more as standard. The premium I've paid for the R (initial vehicle cost, not running cost!!) will definitely out weigh the cost of adding everything I wanted on a GTI.
-
I was trying to not impart what I would consider 'desirables' onto the OP, just our general consensus.
Example, Leather is over-rated and I really like the cloth, ETTO. Also, I'd be sh1tting myself if the Xenons broke.
I wish I'd held out for a MFSW car with Sat-Nav and the winter pack.
-
Also, I'd be sh1tting myself if the Xenons broke.
That's what the warranty is for... :happy2:
-
The second car does appear to have the 18'' monzas, but I think they have a painted finish similar to the 17's
-
I don't have the best eyesite... They look small to be 18" as well, no? :sad1:

.........but runs out sometime. If the car feels right then go for it. Mine dosen't have the highline or leather or xenons but the car was right when i looked at it so went for it,nearley a year on & it's still a fantastic car that goes like stink. :happy2:
-
Quite frankly, I wouldn't go too nuts over the options list imho. It basically depends on what you want for the car.
Personally, mine was relatively poverty-spec (although my wishlist was quite long originally!)
Mine has -
17" - actually prefer the ride, although Monza II look nicer.
Lux pack 2
Midline computer - had an Audi S4 Avant prior and tbh, never really used it! Nice if available, but certainly not a deal-breaker.
Crappy RCD300 with 10 speakers - have ripped this out and installed an F900bt. Don't like the RNS510. Speakers have been upgraded and a sub installed in the wheel arch.
No Xenons - my eyesight is sh1t anyway. Super lights aint gonna make any difference!! LOL!!
Armrest - I loved mine in the Audi, so was happy to see this addition.
Cloth interior - saw a lot of leather interiors that looked very tired on young cars.
DSG - kinda like marmite (love it or loathe it). Me? Not overly impressed tbh.
No winterpack, nor mfsw (don't need it as I have my own stereo and iphone/bluetooth!)
However, mine's a nice base for some modding (see my car in the members section).
AND it was cheap with LOWWWWW miles :happy2:
So see what you can live with (and without) - go from there!

Might have to take that for the signature!

LOL!! All yours mate :happy2:

Hey, thanks for such a wide response has realy given me something to think about! I am swaying with what dano has been sayin in terms of the options. Some of the extras dont seem to have much of an effect on me tbh as i can live without mfsw and leather. and also i am hoping for little bit of a project. But whatever i get in the end im sure i'll be happy with and for sure will put some pics up!
Thanks again for all the help

...........mate trust me you will.Mk5 GTI takes some beating.

It doesn't have to. I have the VW balance left on mine then it will be extended.
