Title: animal's MkV...
Post by: animal on May 04, 2010, 11:45:02 pm
So after a long time doing my research (mostly here), shopping around and not being able to find the spec/colour I wanted I decided against a GTI and will be picking this up on Saturday...

More or less fully loaded with a few choice mods to follow in due course

I've always wanted an R32 and as much as I will always have a soft spot for the original, I couldn't bring myself to spend a fair wedge on a car that is the same as age as the one it's replacing. I test drove a few MkV's and loved the more refined ride and more modern interior. So I decided what the hell, time to scratch that itch!

I also blame Evo magazine. One of their writers has recently bought a V6 Clio. By his own admission, it's a stupid car: A handful and expensive to run but he loves it and he's always wanted one. This really struck a chord with me, so I decided to ignore the £400+ a year tax and fuel economy and went with my heart not my head!

I had a feeling you'd both approve.

It's in need of an RNS-510 (I think I've lucked-out one the factory stereo - it's got a non-Mp3 RCD-300, which I thought were standard?), 18" OEM Omanyts and some vinyl here and there but otherwise I dont have big plans.

Heated leather Recaros FTW!  :happy2:

Zorst - yes, Blueflame or Miltek (not decided yet)
Intake - unlikely, probably will just go for a decent panel filter but I intend to call ITG too see if the new Maxogen will fit
Shortshift - No need my son - DSG FTW! Will be remapping that though  :happy2:

I do plan to remap the ECU too - not for the small power gain but the for improved power delivery and throttle response. I'm waiting to see how Custom Code's VVT Attack performs on an 'impartial' dyno. If their claims are proven to be true, I shall heading to JBS for their ECU and DSG remap package. Failing that, it's off to C2 just up the road in Basingstoke.

Cheers - I like it because it's not blue. As much as I love the colour, most boy-racers/chavs knows that DBP=R32 and I could do with out the attention. In silver, debadged, it's much more discreet - until I open the taps. I'm happy for people just to think it's 'just' a Golf

Who has the R32 with the wrapped grille and BBS CH's?

EDIT: mikebgti, the nicest looking R32 I have seen. Black wrapped grill totally transforms it imo.

I am interested to see how mapped cars dyno especially at Surrey RR as I think its a very accurate dyno.

As for Milltek and EVOMS I can demo those.

Matte black grill and wing mirror wrap is practically top of my list! Should suit a silver car too.

Resonated or non? Very keen to hear one of these first hand. Bit concerned with the motorway drone that get reported with Millteks.

Ironically - I'm working on a big hearing-defense project at the moment, got a feeling some ear plugs might be in order at SRR!

And a tolerant Fiancee!

I'm going to have a play with the flapper mod, but reading up on it - it's less of noise thing and more of a back pressure thing to help with low-range torque. My concern with fitting an after market exhaust is that I'll loose some low-down torque which is kind of where I need it for my commute crawl to work.
Title: Re: animal's MkV...
Post by: VC on May 05, 2010, 11:20:15 am
the flapper mod, thats no more than disabling the diaphragm on the back of the exhaust dude

its there for EU noise regulations to keep the car quiet at low revs, once you build the revs the diaphram opens and the car runs at normal noise levels, by disabling it you'll only get a minor increase in noise levels (same as when your at higher revs) so kinda pointless although will crack a small smile but no where near as large a smile as an aftermarket replacement imho  :happy2:

been there, done it  :innocent:
Title: Re: animal's MkV...
Post by: Hedge on May 05, 2010, 11:29:08 am
The flapper only appears to shut off one of the exhaust exits which is why one pipe is always cleaner than the other.

Res Milltek ftw or Capristo if you're feeling rich.

I appreciate its partly to do with noise but if you read into it, it's also to help with exhaust gas velocity which equates to back pressure which results in a little more torque at low RPM. I'm going to disconnect and block it off and see how I get on.

Indeed you do - well spotted! They were a real added bonus as you couldnt see them from the interior photo in the ad online. Arrived to test drive the car and had to double take when I saw them - definitely the icing on the cake. They're in amazing condition too - I'm very fussy when it comes to leather seats.

Think Matte black, or carbon fibre wrap would look nicer than the gloss black.

Sorry for my poor show guys - had such a busy weekend and worked late today as well.

Car is absolutely fantastic. Didn't run out of fuel... But I can see that it could easily happen on spirited drive somewhere remote! Is there petrol station half way round the Nurburgring for R32s?

At the risk of upsetting the purists, I can't imagine that V6 without DSG - it's so well suited. And my fiancee has even admitted that the leather Recaros are actually really comfortable after being very skeptical - she wants to drive it as much as I do!

Will try to get some photos up asap, possibly from tomorrow nights meet!

Let the modding begin...

Although I'm a keen photographer myself, I'm hoping to meet up with a mate in the next few days who is trying to break into car photography for shoot, so should have some decent photos to upload soon.

Also discovered I might be able to retro fit my PhatBox MP3 system to the car with the VW headunit which is a bonus.

So Hedge, DomT and I went to the R32OC RR day at Surrey RR. I just wanted to make sure all was well and to set a bench mark for any future mods.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fanimal87%2FR32%2FSurrey_RR_01.jpg&hash=fae725a1e9f0c89825cedae00ed93caa8e9a21fa)

Suffice to say, I was quite pleased with the result:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fanimal87%2FR32%2FSurrey_RR_02.jpg&hash=61f98a58c7e83b496315d0148c71e63446f1cf42)

Mods so far: A full tank of V-Power  :happy2:

This was set after several runs. Even after posting 243bhp on the very first run, I was happy, but they just kept going up. When I got to 249.5bhp I thought that was it, but Charlie decided to give it one more go. Bang on the book figure!

Most of the other cars were getting mid 240's (including several with full exhuast systems), so I was pretty chuffed with this. It even beat a couple mapped cars, which clearly weren't running quite right. Also worth noting, I was only 3bhp shy of a car running a Gruppe M intake and a Capristo.

Hedge did pretty well too, but I'll let him post his own results. All in all, a good morning with some great weather. I'm now not in any mad panic to to remap though, and after todays results - I think I might just stick with the flapper mod for the exhuast and just get some bigger tips fitted. Chassis mods for me now!
