as above? Im sure someone on here got lucky and their AA man had GTI coilpacks
-
The RAC VAG techs normally carry them.
AA aren't the OEM breakdown company now so maybe not.
-
Just replaced all mine Pov. Only way to be sure you haven't got any weak ones from propping up the one that goes.
Mine was misfiring on cylinder 4 and so that coilpack got binned. Which one/ones on your's have failed?
-
RAC replaced one on my Ibiza Cupra years ago. It was a 1.8t.
-
I got one 3 years ago from the AA man, but it wasnt the right one, but still was enough to get me home.

he came, looked, didnt have the right one, but said he will start carrying them in the future.
Ive come to a conclusion that maybe its some outside forces trying to stop me from going to a certain place at a certain time lol.
Will just buy one sometime during the week
-
Dont fancy taking it to the dealer?
-
na too much hassle, might ring them though and see if they will just give me a replacement for the fooked one without needing to see the car when im on my lunch break or something.
Hurdy it was coilpack 4.

Hurdy it was coilpack 4.
Now that is interesting. A few others have had coilpack 4 give out first too. I wonder if there is some sort of weakness around the set-up of the coilpacks that makes number 4 give in first. It is usually excessive heat that causes failure, so I have 2 (very loose and unfounded ones!!)
1. That the cylinder is more prone to overheating at that side of the engine
2. That the cooling on that side is less efficient.

A bit unrelated but thought I would share it with you anyway, The AA came to recover a customers car from our industrial estate last week, it was a vauxhall that wouldnt start. The AA man arrived and we watched him trying to start this car by cranking it over for about 20 mins, ending up with a flat battery. This wasnt enough so he attatched a booster pack and asked the cars owner to crank it over on the key, he then appeared from the back of his van with a ball hammer and started HITTING THINGS IN THE ENGINE BAY :surprised:
We went over to see if we could help, he said 'its the EGR valve mate, its blocked' we informed him that we could see and smell unburnt fuel from the exhaust and its likely that the intake manifold flap was probably stuch shut as its a common problem (and that you cant unblock an EGR valve by hitting it with a hammer) so he spent about 3 mins looking round THE BACK OF THE ENGiNE with a torch, we helped him out by pointing him in the direction of the intake manifold flap motor and he said, that fine, I am looking for the intake , which we then pointed out at THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE. aT THIS POINT WE RETREATED BACK TO WORK.
We then watched as he tried to pinout the fuse box to try and open the manifold flap manually before cranking the engine for what seemed like ages, smoke started pouring from under the bonnet and the starter motor died! He then played around with the fusebox and poked his test probe into what seemed like random pins, spoke with the customer and drove off, later a pickup truck came and took the car away.
Later that week we found he had cracked the casing on the EGR valve by hitting it with his hammer, killed the starter motor and wiring looms to it, fried the ECU with his random poking around with probes and the repair bill came to over £1200!
The vauxhall dealer then replaced the intake manifold flap, which turned out to be the only problem all along!
Still want the AA to fit your coilpack :scared:

I've heard quite a few horror stories about breakdown companies and that one is certainly a good indicator of how bad they can really be. :scared:
-
i know skoda breakdown cover use VAG trained breakdown technicians, not to sure about the normal breakdown services though. gues they are more jack of all trades master of none
-
IMHO there is no need to replace all four coil packs.
I had one go on me at around 20k miles. So i bought four but only replaced the one that had gone and just kept the other 3 as spares.
Im now on 59k miles and the 3 spares are still in the boot just in case.
I would defo buy 2 just incase there is another weak one in there. But all 4 will set you back about £125.
RAC & AA normally carry them as it's apparently a common problem and not just for VAG cars (or so i was told when the Skoda Assist guy came out to me who incidentally was RAC)

I had one go last Summer at about 7:00am on my way to Castle Combe. VW Assistance/RAC got a van to me within 45mins.. He didn't have a Mk5 GTI coilpack onboard (they're different from Mk5 Golf, which he had) but phoned a workmate whose wife got him out of bed on his day off.. Went and collected and then fitted it. Top guy!
The VW Assistance guys are usually VW specialist trained. They cover Europe too.

Was on a 100 mile run
Stopped just before I got home and when I restarted theEPC light stayed on.
Just tried it again and the engine management light has come on as well so both lights are on.
HELP?????????

could be anything mate tbh, need to plug in vag com. If it still drives fine I wouldnt be worried in the slightest, probably just a dodgy sensor. These engines are really tempermental like that.

Just replaced all mine Pov. Only way to be sure you haven't got any weak ones from propping up the one that goes.
Mine was misfiring on cylinder 4 and so that coilpack got binned.
The car was still misfiring today, so swapped out the Denso's and it is running like new again. VERY strong at the top end. Only had the Denso's in for around 6k miles too :scared:

ooh thats not good john, hopefully the NGKs ive just put in will last longer than that! :surprised:
so does that mean you may have not really neaded the coil packs replacing then? sorry can i ask what is your mileage john? im on 40k now with no coil pack failures yet, touch wood :chicken:

Coilpacks are fine. I swapped the old ones back in to check and they run normally. At least it means I have spares
