Title: Wives, Girlfriends & Golfs.....are they compatible?
Post by: DavyP on January 14, 2009, 03:32:18 pm

Is it just me or does anyone else's other half not get the point of modding.

My every attempt at purchasing a mod is met with grief and the usual you spent x amount on the car why do you need to spend more?
Whats wrong with the brakes you have? There's nothing wrong with the exhaust you have already got etc.

Her latest tactic is to match my spending penny for penny, which is somewhat disturbing.

Should I have beat her when we first met? Is that why shes now so unruley

It's got to the point now where I have to covertly syphon off funds to make a purchase, made harder by the fact she's an accountant.  So make me feel better and enlighten me with your tails of grief and domestic strife.  Or perhaps a solution to my problems?

My girlfriend is pretty good as she is almost as bad for speed as I am. I got her Beetle remapped and when the clutch started to slip I told her we might have to take the map off. Needless to say the map is still on there as she wasnt happy with losing any power. She loves driving my remapped Golf and as long as all the bills are paid she is happy for me to do what I like!  :happy2:

My philosophy has always been the same!

''Can't live with em, can't kill em''

I have my own account and do what I want with my money, this seems to work until she asks how much a certain thing was then begins to think about what she could have bought for the house with ''that much!!''

same as mark really she love the power so soon as i get a golf it will be in for a remap i think just need to decided on GTI or GTTDI then the modding will begin, she can't complain becouse i dont when she is buying another bag or shoes or make up

Mine doesn't care less, she knows I only ever spend what I have (i.e. I have no debt from either buying it or modding it) and I've always got money if we need to go halves on something like a holiday or stuff for the house. I don't question her shoe collection for the same reasons!

I don't don't have any money hungry habits like smoking etc, so the car is my only luxury expenditure.

Hmmm you all seem fortunate so far, there has to be some poor soul out there who has a thumbprint larger than the one on my forehead?

The worse thing is the mods are quite expensive,  a good way to pocket money undetected was a fiver of groceries and £50 cash back, but when everything seems to add up to £1000, ie exhausts. suspension etc. £50 doesnt go far.

my missus uses the gti as her daily, top lass (Wheelman had the misfortune to meet her), she keeps asking me questions about remaps at the moment for it, ended up with the Pirelli as she wanted the extra 30ps, she has always been into cars rather than Jimmy Choos

she doesn't mix with my main hobby of sailing which is a real pain in the ar#e as had to cut my trips abroad and racing right down, no consideration, but do get time off for good behaviour

currently planning our wedding so being a bit more restrained, however, she wants to turn up in a lambo

No car is worth getting grief over - just mod it in your own time and agree a percentage of your earnings you're allowed to save, bulk this up with overtime or whatever, just don't go behind her back as it'll end up messy.

These forums are a dangerous place, you see people buying all sorts of nice things and some people feel a pressure to keep up... there's no need!

Some people save for mods, some people manage borrowing money for mods carefully and some people fall into the trap of having to live off beans for a flash car they can't afford to run because they're up to their eyeballs in debt.

ask tom, he has a large thumbprint when it comes to modding his car and spending time on it! he wont appreciate me saying that! haha!

Steph is great to be honest, its my money and she knows that. and as long as she doesnt feel neglected, which i would say she never is, she doesnt mind me spending time/money on my car. she knows its a huge passion of mine!

she does occassionally say "you geek" buts only said in jest.
she loves cars nearly as much as me, and guys, dont worry shes not a butch rugby player! haha! shes got a few subtle mods to her 2008 mini! ;)

My missus drives a cooper s with an lsd so is bit of a car nut herself.  Everytime i mention a remap she instantly replies, do it
Its actually the sensible part of me putting me off.  The only reason i bought the rns-510, and the ed30 rear bumper and infact everything ive done to mine is because she was so pushy i just though **** it and spent the money

Mine's got absolutely no interest in cars, if I mention mods or meets then she just glazes over and calls me a loser (jokingly, I hope).. her ideal car is something pretty with all the lazy extras.

Definately makes sense, I remember when we first got married we'd next to nothing as we'd just bought our house.  In the living room(which was quite big) all we had was a settee, coffe table and portable tv and upstairs a double bed.

So being the sensible one, i promptly headed to currys bought a huge telly and sky tv, my main reason being when i had a few beer and the double vision set in I couldnt see the football properly.

Funny enough Mrs P went nuts when she got home and seen them.  Women and their priorities eh?

My excuse would have been along the lines of ''well I can't afford to go to the pub so I got these instead''

Talking of football and pubs read this joke recently , thought it was funny,

A young couple are just about to have their first child, the woman has got very bad cravings for all funny things to eat , the husband likes a bit of a drink and a football match at the pub, one day the wife says “I fancy some snails” , “snails“ he said “snails” she says,  so off he goes to get the snails.

On his way back from the market he bumps into a old friend he hadn’t seen since school, “fancy a drink, the united games on” says his mate, “ok” he says, off they go to the pub .

7 hours later he’s on his way back home ,(pissed as a fart) he is wobbling all over the road ,  walking up his drive he trips and drops all the snails all over the drive, his wife comes out and says “ were the f**k have you been” , he looks down at the snails and says ”come on lads not far to go now”.

The mrs doesnt really bother, as long as she gets things she wants then its sorta even - although it obviously costs me more in the end!

In fact the Mrs generally likes cars, she doesnt know the in's and out's like us chaps but then thats our job.  She told me the other day she would have my car, sell hers and then I could have a new golf ... now where's that watering can, the money tree needs some attention...

I also get the 'geeky forum' or 'geeks' in jest too.

Davyp you just have to plan it like a military manoeuvre.
an example of this would be a rather large sum i needed to get the wheels i have wanted for ages.
you must first let her know how much you love them by calling her over and saying "look at these darling what do you think they would look like on our car". AT first you will get this face  :indifferent: so you must show her lots of pictures until she really cant be bothered to walk over and look any more, then she should say yes, they look nice in that picture, just so she can have some piece.
Its at this stage where you must say "if we could afford them would you let me get some" she will smile and say no.
Now the important bit call her over and say look lets just get a price off the net now, i probably wont be able to afford them i know they will be expensive, but just lets have a look. Then just click on any set of Bentley wheels or something ridiculously expensive she wont notice its a different wheel as long as its round    :chicken: Then as the price comes up you must drop your head and say oh sh!t, thats that over with then.  :innocent:
you must now over the next few weeks let her catch you looking at the wheels at every opportunity  :rolleye:
it may take a while but at some stage over the next few weeks she will see the longing on your face as you gaze at them, and she will come over and put her hand on your shoulder and say, there just to expensive honey she will turn round with her back to you and smile her little head off, feeling really sad for you and your obsession.
Now you will be entering another phase were you randomly do stuff for her that you would not normally do,  :sleepy: like leave her with the remote,  tidy up before she normally makes you do it. A favourite of mine is to look through the holiday snaps on the computer with her and remind her how beautiful she looks next to the sea.   :chicken: what ever you do dont make it obvious perhaps leaving her with the remote may set alarm bells ringing.  :signIWS:
your now entering the last couple of phases.
After all you extensive hidden research into the cheapest possible price, you have got to hit her with it like a bomb going off and most importantly the word
sale! sale! sale!
Look! Look! i have found the wheels for a 1/4 of that usual selling price from a company closing down. I really cant believe it. its at this point you promise her everything that she has ever dreamed of, while pointing out there is only 2 sets left in stock. :jumping: :jumpmove: :scared:
And all your previous weeks of hard work will hopefully pay off.
This should work with almost any mod unless your Jonny C or Hurdy.    :drinking:

Or just tell her they're on sale from the start.

Or better still don't tell her, then when she finds out, tell her they were on sale.

Or just hit with the new mod. In the face.

....Crikey!! How do you know so much about me!?

I'm no longer married and am single and free to mingle but, much as I love ladies, I don't get involved because I've come to value my own selfish freedoms far too much. I don't smoke or drink and, apart from what my daughter needs, I only spend on my car and petrol.

Heaven forbid that anyone happily married here ever faces a divorce in their future, but if it's acrimonious (and 99% are!), then the legal team representing your about-to-be 'other half' will have a field day! - Very much at your expense!

Personally, I advocate as much openness and honesty in a permanent relationship as humanly possible and as a two-way street.

Sorry to be so realistic!

Sorry to be so realistic!

great post, well put!

Such was the detail in this post i'm inclined to believe you actually do this TC, made a good read  :happy2:

It was only light hearted to be honest, my misses lets me do what i want with the occasional raised eyebrow.
All my problems are justifying it to myself, i am lucky enough to be able to afford most mods i want. I just have to battle with the sensible side of my personality telling me to invest money rather than blow it.

I have got my dad and my misses to contend with!! I still live at home and my dad constantly is on at me about modding cars and how much money I have wasted over the years. It does my tits in...it is my only vice so why the hell not!? Cars are a great passion of mine and for some reson he can't seem to understand it. He used to drive Porsche's, Jag's etc. when he was young so he aint got a leg to stand on really. In future I am going to get my goodies sent to another address. Hint hint.....Jay, haha!

And then theres the misses. What you spending money and that for? Do you really need that? What about saving up for our holiday? What about saving up for a house deposit? and so on! I am only 20..I can't imagine what it is gonna be like in future years

Its pretty easy to see what you will end up like Tom if you keep spending on cars.

I reckon the trick to getting your mrs to be quiet is pretty simple, just mod her car first then she cant complain when you take your turn to mod yours (your being the more expensive to mod )

case in point, my mrs had a 1.4 polo.

i bought her a 2ltrT EOS, remapped it, new zorst, CAI, 19" rims, full leather, and a stonking bodykit.....ended up looking like this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Faa104%2FverycherryR32%2Fn609504611_1968876_2750.jpg&hash=539d6baa80d81619c8e15626c73fe70bdef233de)

this now give me access to mods for mine without any winging.

when i bought my 19's....which were vastly more expensive...she cant say a word

and anyway......you only need to make them aware of the mods they notice...theres alot you can do to a car without them noticing

that is unless they read the same forums you post on

Blimey, some people have missus trouble! The main issue I have is spending as much on my car as she spends on her MINI Cooper S Cabrio. She's getting one of the new ones in March so the bills will start all over again. Makes it far easier to justify a remap when she asks, "Are they doing any deals if we get them both done at the same time?"

Seems I inadvertently stumbled into a solution........

I decided that in order to fund some new purchases my Ps3 and 360 had to go.   When the wife got wind of this, after an initial moan, she said "If it means that much to you that you're selling your consoles, just get what you want."    Result :happy2:

Well to be honest I was dead set on doing it, unfortunately I had found a buyer for the PS3 and had to let them down, how-ever in a few days time the Posty will be delivering a TBE and Evoms CAI.   Not bad, as originally this month i'd only budgeted for about £400 on mods.

I think it was the misery I endured with the thought of selling the consoles, added to the fact that tomorrows my birthday and I hate getting older, that I got the sympathy vote.
