Title: Loud humbing/whirling noise coming from rear passenger wheel
Post by: Toast on May 10, 2010, 11:55:21 pm
Hi all got a quick question while driving the ed30 back from my parents house this morning the car has developed a rather loud humbing/whirling vibration noise from what I reckon is the passenger side rear wheel the noise increase's as you speed up and decrease's when slowing down  Could this be a wheel bearing?! Its defo not the miltek and tyre and brake seem fine

many thanks

Toast

Sounds bearingish. Could be a CV joint on the road to failure though as well I suppose.

Is the wheel on the rear side in question getting hotter than the other side? If so, then I'd say the bearing is on it's way out.

What tyres do you Toastie?.

How many miles you done now?? doubt its bearing if its reletively low miles.

I had a wheel bearing go on the front passenger side recently on my Octavia and it had the same/similar sound as to what you describe.

Apparently a crude way to check (which is what the Skoda Guy told me) is to get the car on axle stands. Ensure the handbrake is off in your case as it's the rear and then try and turn the wheel. The wheel should turn freely and if there is any resistance then the bearing has gone/is going. Not tried that myself as he only told me after mine was fixed but worth a go.

Or as Hurdy says see if the wheel is getting hotter than the others after a drive.

simple stuff first

stone caught in tyre tread
flat tyre
stone caught in brakes
get up to speed and take the car out of gear to make sure it still happens

wheel bearings not uncommon though

just had a read at your replies guys, Hurdy the wheel doesn't appear to be any warmer than the other side that was the 1st thing I checked last night, Phil I'm running Pilot exhalto's with 5mm of tread still on them and the cars done 22,279miles :happy2:

John_O checked for any stone seems fine, tyre's not flat, and brakes appear fine aswell it's still happening when upto speed and out of gear

Was this at Camerons truckie??  If so I no the boss man in there and the car was only serviced 600miles ago just before the warranty went on the 3rd of march and I told them to thoroughly check it So may use this as a bargaining tool

Try putting your wheels to the front toastie, and see if the noise shuts up. Cheap and easy check to rule out the tyres.
