Help!!
I have to change my can gateway tomorrow and I'm not sure where it is, although someone said to look above the brake pedal. My car is a 2005/05 model. Any advice would be appreciated.

According to this (http://www.my-gti.com/2296/can-bus-gateway-removing-installing-and-upgrading-volkswagen-golf) they should be above the pedals, but I looked on mine a few months back when I had a new gateway to fit and couldn't find anything. In the end I got a VW specialist to do it for me... never did ask where the thing was though... :confused:

Just changed mine a week or so ago, it was behind the ashtray compartment. Just take the gearstick and ashtray out and you will see it.

Why are you changing it out of interest? I thought I might have had to change mine (early 05 GTI) for the RNS-510 but it seems to operate fine without an upgrade.

My RNS510 which is a version C, has the later firmware so hence flattens the battery. I could downgrade the firmware to an older version, but that seems a bit of a copout.

Gateway is in either behind the ashtray or above the pedals on RHD cars
Hope its behind the ashtray as removing it from above the pedals is a pig

There is a few places I've discovered on the different model years,
Early 04-05 are usually behind the ash tray but I don't know if this is a model specific thing or not i.e only on lower spec cars SE - GT's.
05-06 above the pedals easier to get to if you take the foot heater ducting off and the black p shaped metal bar under the steering column held in by 2 hex bolts...
06> behind the relay plate above the central electrics board its tight but easier to get to than the one above the pedals.

Does upgrading this give any extra features on the Highline display?
Also have read VW are abit funny about doing the upgrade, can anyone confirm?

I don't think it will give you any new features -- I certainly haven't noticed any since having mine changed anyway. If VW aren't keen on doing the upgrade for you I'm sure there'd be a VW/Audi/SEAT/Skoda specialist not too far away that would do it without issues, and it would almost certainly be cheaper.

As i have the Mk 6 MFSW then i should get the mk 6 gateway right?
I have a suspicion that changing to a mk 6 gateway would give me functionality in all the buttons on the SW.
any thoughts on this Darren??
Also woukld changing the gateway make my early 06 car take a rns-510 revision c?? :smiley:

Not 100% sure Danish but I think the MK6 uses a different protocol (BAP) so not sure if the MK6 can gateway would be the way to go! might be different system for the steering controls but certainly the climate, and highline (white screen) are all BAP protocol and so different than the MK5.

Thanks Darren I found mine last night, it is above the brake pedal as you said. You need to be a small contortionist to get to it, unfortunately I am neither of those things! :sad1:

On mine I had to disable usage of the "BAP protocol" on the RNS-510 for the navigation and stereo instructions to work on the DIS -- it's not unreasonable to expect the MFSW buttons would be similarly affected.
Also, a newer gateway would stop your battery being flattened due to the RNS-510 not powering down correctly, which is only a problem on the later units/firmware versions.

Nah, just been wasting far too much time (not to mention money) recently looking at this and other GTI-related websites (there are others I hear you say!?! :wink:)...

Jake as per posting above the mk6 uses a different system that utilises the new intergrated comfort and central electrics board...The BAP system is nothing to do with the car, that system is the new security system used in the new style mk6 clusters which is why the RNS510 has to be set up for it.
The Can Gateway will not give any new features but it will give you options to retro fit new features to the car, i.e MDI,
No mfsw options unfortunately Jake you would need to go back to the early GTI/R32 wheel and old button set with the 2 phone buttons.
As per post above new central electrics board for the cornering lights and emergency stop function
