Title: de-cat
Post by: Janner_Sy on May 14, 2010, 07:41:23 pm
how much louder would you say a "decat mated to the standard cat back" is over say the stock exhaust system and how loud would it be in comparison to a full TBE.

im going to fiddle with my car again, cos is rubbish now and feels numb and crap when you put your foot down.

I used to have a 3" pipewerx DP fitted which sounded really meaty and throaty.  I then bolted a piper non res cat back to it, but if anything id say it was then too loud, and my driving slowed down as result of how obvious it was if you stuck your foot down.

So im after some stage 2 perfomrance again but not sure if i should fit a decat for the extra performance or just stick to a downpipe??

decat gives a small noise increase mate, but nothing compared to a full TBE, if you are after a cheap mod that will give you a little power and noise go for it :happy2:

so its only a small increase.  thats good news.

what about remaps. Will the remap need adjusting to utilise the decat.  I dont want to fit it and find out that the decat causes loss of power.

BTW I still have all the stage 2 an stage 2+ maps on my STS handset so i can go sraight to stage 2 no issues.

I did back to back dyno's of before and after I had the decat done. The car made 4.5bhp and 4.5lbft extra with the decat and NOTHING else altered.

Decat will help spool up too....

Depends on your software if it will throw a cell of fault code though.

The yanks use a 90 degree wayne angle connector on the lambda sensor to keep it away from the flow of gasses. Loads have done this on the mkv forum and seems to work with stock software as well

The standard downpipe is really restrictive.
After fitting the TBE the gains were great.
After removing it the power loss is really really noticeable !!!

You could just remove the first CAT
This is the major restriction in the standard exhaust as the heat and gasses hit a brick wall exiting the turbo.
Its made from brittle ceramic and can be removed with a little persuasion

thats good to know.  might order one in a second then.  looking at the options,

i could order a 2.5" piper Decat downpipe
or a 3" inch decat blueflame.

Bearing in  mind this is only a k03, what do you think

Mike your not allowed any input now :P. Its your fault i want to re mod the car

Naaaah..  :happy2: Listen up, im leaving my house in about 10 mins.. It should be loud enough for 'most' of town to hear it now haha..

Anyways, back on topic.. Going from a Sports cat to de-cat will help power and torque as Hurdy said.. I have found in almost all cases going de-cat reduces noise when cruising, but makes the car louder on throttle.. Usually, less of a boom too with de-cat.. More of a raspy note..

Hope that helps..
Title: Re: de-cat
Post by: jon-tfsi on May 14, 2010, 09:40:40 pm
A Decat to Std Catback would sound great IMO

Should also provide the same performance as any aftermarket TBE on a K03 motor.

The gasses cool as they travel through the system and effectively shrink, not requiring such a large diameter to travel at the same speed. The Std cat back is 2.25" internal diameter on a GTI (prob same on VRS) and should not be restrictive.

It might be worth getting your MOT done just before you have the decat installed

what would you guys reccommend decat wise for my k03

a 2.5" piper Decat downpipe
or a 3"Blueflame decat downpipe

I think 3" downpipe.. As it has been said, when the EGT's are at there highest you need the larger diameter..

cool,  thats only £225 as well. :jumpmove:

I now need to look into a good but quiet(ish) intake.  Last time i had the full non res TBE, and ITG and the missus did nothing but complain.

I want the same performance as before with less shouting about it.  which is always handy as in medway you cant drive a mile without seeing a cop car,

the sound of the grinder is hurting my ears   :scared: poor milly!

Two bolt flange on the turbo side of the cat and using the existing slot/sleave

Cutting away the little triangle bracket on the underside of the cat toallow swapping.

initial reports very happy :)

feels like a great improvement for £95 £110.  It cost more than quoted, I can only assume because of having to angle grind off a bit of metal off.

Feels to pick up quicker and is louder on boost. Didn't manage to get a pic will see if I can get one after doing the shopping :)

The engine light can come on when the car is idling or on very light throttle. Mine comes on probably once a month or so. It recognises the fault as the engine emission fault (beyond threshold)

The end towards the rear of the car doesnt have / need flanges.

It flanged just above the exhaust bracket near where the flexi is.  Ill get a better pic soon as I get chance.
