Title: seat bolster wear
Post by: wigit on January 16, 2009, 06:07:35 pm
took the GTI to the dealers today so their warranty manager good look at the front seats and send some happy snaps to VW, 4 months and 4,500 miles in the leather isn't looking to good, i was expecting the alcantara to wear

in fairness dealer has been great and we had a look at the bolsters on an Edition 30 with 10k on the clock, curious whether any of you guys have had any problems

on the plus side got to give the GTI a good run for once and enjoyed playing with it on some quiet roads  :innocent:

I was looking at a 07 ED30 at the dealers on Thursday and the bolster was in the same shape as yours. I have had two seat backs relplaced due to wear.

The drivers bolster on my ED30 has exactly the same type of wear after 6K, my old A3 had the same wear but it never got any worse tbh even after 40K
Pretty poor though imo..

same happened on my cloth ones, the crease appears very quickly, but never gets any worse, tbh, its hard to see how this can be avoided

Mine are starting to show a bit of wear. But it depends on how big you rear is(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq165%2Fmadmangti_photo%2Fbigbum.jpg&hash=b32934c5241a040ea08dc8d0dbaa49baad03064e)

they all are a bit like this, it can be helped by conditioning them and some even say heating them with a hair dryer (being careful) can help, let us know how you get on

The problem is obvious, Pirelli's are known for side wall wear.
My advice would be replace with PS 2  :signIWS:

its ok saying they are all like that but I don't think its acceptable on a 20K+ car

After seeing SteveP's today with 20k+ Im not happy and will be persuing a warranty claim the next time Im at the stealers! The leather has been cleaned and fed on several occasion and even had the 'hair dryer' treatment

Unfortunately thats the view i take, they were completely uninterested when i had the same problem on my '55' plate GTI, as were Audi with the A3, i'm not worried about it tbh as i've seen how bad they can look after having had new covers fitted...
Besides, i'm having too much fun with the car to worry about it lol

Well whether they like it or not they WILL replace the seat for me!

SteveP's looks almost new so if they are capable of producing a bolster that can be sat on  :surprised: I want my car to have have it!

No I wouldn't consider a recover, new seat for me!

how long would the interior be under warranty ?

Depends on the claim I would have thought? If its a failure the full three years, but wear issues are likley to be more complicated as the car gets older.

irrespective of warranty you can quote the Sale of Goods Act with reference to durability, always worth a read and have the facts to hand should the going get tough, normally a copy highlighted for them helps

not to mention my missus is now paranoid about the size of her ar$e  :scared:

The side bolster on my previous car (new MINI), the spring collapsed after 3K miles. I was told by MINI that this was general wear and tear..............LOL...after 3K miles..yes nice reply thanks!

One of many reasons why I promptly got rid of the car, in exchange for all of my money back!

Hope you get the issue sorted wigit, and get a better response than I did by MINI!

Yeah mine's pretty bad too.

It's a clicky!

That's at 8k (bought it at 3k). Just figured it was wear and tear.

same condition as mine stealth, but mine has 26k on it

It seems everyone i have seen suffers it.
I would expect from previous VW experience that its a 2 years cover on it as its VW themselfs but the 3rd year is a dealer/VWuk cover that can be a real pain to claim from.

I'll post pics of mine tomorrow - I'm quite on the lardy size at 16st and F508 ! The bolster on the right nearest the drivers door is rather creased, on the same hand though is the passenger seat - that 99% accomodated my partner who is 8st F504 is totally mint - if only my back side wasn't so lardy !! Occasionaly I sit in the passenger seat, usually after beverage consumption and think - this side is so much more "bolstery" than mine.

True though didn't expect that on my £25k ED30 !!!

Yeah the problem is when I get out, I swing my legs out first, which means I'm then putting weight on the bolster. Plus I'm a short-arse, so my feet don't even touch the ground when I swing them over, so I have lean forward to get out, putting even more pressure on the seat bolster.

Getting in's no problem since I throw my backside on to the seat and swing my legs over the bolster without putting any weight on them.

I've started pushing the seat back every time I get out of the car to try and stop this happening, a pain in @rse but if you get into the habit its ok
Title: Re: seat bolster wear
Post by: stealthwolf on January 17, 2009, 08:18:15 pm
It'd be nice not to have to do that each and every time. Wouldn't be so bad if there was an electronic motor+switch to this for you.
Title: Re: seat bolster wear
Post by: gazbutS3 on January 17, 2009, 08:20:38 pm
it would, like a memory seat, you press to get out and in, then it goes back to where you always have it
Title: Re: seat bolster wear
Post by: JPC on January 17, 2009, 10:36:11 pm
a lot of america cars have that when you pull the key outa the ignition the seat goes back.

its probably more to do with them trying to get there stomachs past the steering wheel
Title: Re: seat bolster wear
Post by: Top Cat on January 18, 2009, 04:05:44 pm
Not much help guys, but i have to move the seat back every time or i cant get out, i make sure i never put any weight on the bolster by placing left hand on the wheel and right hand on the sill and then lift myself over using weight on right leg, although this does not help with the quality of the seat it will make it last longer.

This was something that really pissed me off when I had my ED30!! It was in bad condition after 1000 miles. By comparison I now have a 3 year old A3 with 45000 miles and the leather in it is still in great condition   :surprised:

T88OMM, hence why i dug out my a3 interior taken when i flogged it and in fairness it never received much tlc in its lifetime, whats annoying is its not consitent on our VWs which have done similar mileage

had a call from my dealer today, they are changing the front covers in the first instance on the pirelli, the covers are on back order from germany at the moment, and will let me know when they arrive, the dealer had been pushing for new seats so we shall have to see what they look they look like

at least vw have acknowledged there is a problem with tthem, once again my dealer Rigeway Wantage have been excellant giving me an update on they day they had promised, little things in terms of customer service make a difference

hopefully this may help a few of you

Hmm....maybe I'll raise this issue with the dealers when the car goes in for a service in a few weeks.
