Post by: Moschops on May 20, 2010, 08:34:39 pm
Anyone got one, in particular the direct drive versions.

Whats it like?

Is it quite?

As good a product as say Bosch or Miele?

So Andy, it would be ideal for Mrs Chopper's to use whilst I'm sleeping off nights then?

miele are the quitest, most reliable, and come with the longest warranty, but they also cost alot more. Bosch white goods appliances are alright, but miele are on another.

My cousin used to be a washing machine (etc) service engineer for the local Bosch/Meile/Smeg etc agents. Top end stuff basically.
He always says the the old Bosch stuff was very solid and reliable (unless you went for the fancy electronic controlled models that had problems) but the modern ones are mostly Spanish built and built down to a price to make them more competetive price wise in the market place ( so now they're SEAT washing machines?   ).
Meile stuff is the Rolls Royce of washing machines, but they do have their problems if you're unlucky.

He is under the impression the LG is budget stuff, or used to be, so maybe they've moved significantly upmarket?

Anyway, he always says as a rule of thumb, when you go and look at a washing machine in your local Comet/Currys etc emporium, before you look at any of the machine's features a good guide to how well the washing machine is engineered is simply to tap the side panels. Crap washing machines will be all bendy, good ones will hardly bend and a Meile will just sit there like a German tank soaking up your pathetic efforts..........

agree with what people have said about miele, recently kitted out my new flat with a washer and dishwasher and you don't even notice when they are on, pretty good on the electrical consumption too  :happy2:

not cheap but worth it,

will be changing the oven and hob soon

Thanks all,

Yes the current washing machine is an old generation Bosch..so a good one, even the engineer told us that. But at 11 years old, I think she's suffering, washing not always clean, detergent not being taken in, yes we have cleaned all the crap out the top of the water inlets and the drawer throughly cleaned plus she's getting noisy...

So we went and had a loook at Comet and Currys last night, nice Miele in Comet but at £799...Mrs Choppers was not impressed, but my mum has one and she loves it, but Mrs Choppers liked the LG with the direct drive on them.....hence this thread.

Engineer is coming out on Tuesday (bollocks...may miss the nimrod coming into Shawbury!!!)  so we're hoping he may write it off (has extended warrenty with a vouchers scheme on it... :happy2:)

dude look online too, we found our oven/hob/fridge and freezer all worked out cheaper even with delivery than comet etal using sites like www.pricerunner.co.uk etc  :happy2:

2 day deliveries and they removed the old gear as well

LG are much improved. Miele motors etc are designed to last longer and will hence the price hike. If you can afford one you wont regret. Personally would go for Bosch/Siemens, ideally made in Germany although this is getting more difficult.

John Lewis will price match any retailer with a showroom/shop and offer 2 year rather than 1 warranty. Siemens often offer 5 year warrenty promo's. guess who used to manage the electrical department  :happy2:

Thanks Ash... :happy2:

I like the Miele as my mum has got one and is always singing it's praises... :signLOL: The newer Bosch's don't seem to be as nice as the earlier models, plus some of the buttons seem a bit ELC..

However Mrs Choppers really likes the LG direct drive jobbies...but it all depends on Tuesday when the engineer comes to have a look at "old bessie" and we'll take it from there...

Thanks for the input guys... :notworthy:
