Title: Centre panel removal - How please?....
Post by: RedRobin on May 24, 2010, 09:54:40 am

^ The section you see which is carbon vinyl wrapped - How to remove that panel section, please?

The pic is Saint Steve's car and I know he said it's easy but I still need to know exactly how. All my alu trims and Recaro backs are carbon vinyl wrapped, so I think it will complete my interior trim [until I fit a half-cage!].

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FRedRobin_05%2FCarbonfibre%2Fcarbonvinyl_wholetrim.jpg&hash=383d29ec750ca604c794da94f538337adb55c332)

Thx for any help - Always appreciated  :drinking:

You will need a Trim Tool Robin to get it out.

They sell them in Halfords for about £10 or you can get them off flea bay.

All you do then is insert the tool in between the trim and the dash and gently pry it out all round.

Thanks, Carl - Any particular type/shape of tool? Or is it a set?

Robin,

The part which is wrapped has TWO screws at the top just behind the Air vents... The rest of it is just clipped in which you can pull off with the right tool...

You`ll have to do the same thing here as if you were taking the RNS510 out just to get the top two screws out...

I`ll find a pic and upload it to show you.

This the one Halfords Sell

Some people dont like ti because it is metal. As long as your careful you wont cause any damage (i never have in the 18 months or so that i have had it)

Or you can get ones like this on Ebay

 Trim removal tool kit  (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-INTERIOR-DASH-DOOR-TRIM-PANEL-REMOVAL-PRY-TOOL-KIT-/180505069989?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2a06f0c9a5#ht_839wt_1167)

you need to remove the air vents at the top first..before you can get to the two screws
here is a guide
http://www.golfmk5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=693&page=2
you don't need to disconnect the hazard switch and the air bag wire just lift the centre panel out of the way

Steady on there Tiger
The Golf is put together different to the Skoda. You need to take the top vents out first which gives access to the front screws for that panel.

As has been said a decent set of trim tools will help.
I use these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sykes-Pickavant-5-Piece-Trim-Removal-Tool-Set-/390160244097?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item5ad75cdd81

If a sausage fingered ape such as myself can manage it then I am sure you can Robin.

Actually I am sure it has been posted on here a few times.

Just off into the Bunker now to await the incoming flak  :fighting:

TBH a wide bladed butter knife pops the trim perfectly, wrap the blade end in PVC tape to protect the trim.

....Also to protect the butter knife blade - Mine's a valuable antique and used every day. Good tip, gobbler though  :drinking:

Done!

First pic:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FRedRobin_05%2FCarbonfibre%2FCarbonVinylCentre1.jpg&hash=7f6532f078e23c913cbb9f9bf0b993d05f2d13e9)

I'm pleased with the way it visually connects with the carbon vinyl wrapped alu strips.

THX to Saint Steve and also SteveP for his posted guide directed to by Hedge  :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:

Oooh, I forgot to add Saint Steve's missus advice:

"The Seven P's: Prior Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance"

I'm now wondering what originally caused her to think such a thing, Steve!

Have now taken some better pics. I think I'll start a new thread in Cosmetic Modifications to show carbon vinyl use throughout a mk5 interior.. Later.. I haven't had breakfast yet!

Here's a better pic:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FRedRobin_05%2FCarbonfibre%2FCarbonVinylCentre2.jpg&hash=7710cf5a8d8fb12292bcbaef2601a351e0656782)

Looks better than real CF inside the cabin. The real CF is too high gloss for an interior imo.. Too many reflections. But I don't even like Audi-esque silver bits - I know it looks quality but just not my style which I prefer to look funkier on a Golf.
