The easiest way i have found is to
Stand infront of your car place one hand on the bottom left of the engine cover then pull the top right of the cover off towards you. It will be a bit stiff but give it a good strong pull then. Before you put the cove back on spreay a lil WD40 or similar on the rubber grommets :happy2:

It can really help to run the engine for a short time to warm up the rubber gromits, makes them much more flexible, and easier to pull off. :happy2:

Have a read of one of my threads on this. A great amount of effort required.

well guys i struggled for half an hour last night managed to shift the r/h side no go on the other side, gonna price up a new cover before i try again. or do i take to vw dealer and ask them to fit new air filter and if they break it!

New engine covers are seriously expensive from VW, as Thor said if you try once the engine is warm this will help. I cracked and split an engine cover trying to remove it from a cold engine, I managed to get a secondhand one for £50. You have just gotta be bit brave and give it a good tug and it should pop off. :happy2:

got the damn thing off at last no damage, thanks stealthwolf for threads and the others who replied, back on with plenty of lubricant

Grab it hard and give it a firm yank. Lube helps.
