got 06 mk5 gti how the hell do you get the top eng. covers off ive tried all morning and afraid they are gonna break. just took it to a local garage and they were afraid they would break them. HELP

just give each corner a good pull and it will just pop off

yh pull each corner up and towards u once there on.... they are a real bugger 2get off jus dnt pull the thin side by the oil cap as dat will break

The easiest way i have found is to

Stand infront of your car place one hand on the bottom left of the engine cover then pull the top right of the cover off towards you. It will be a bit stiff but give it a good strong pull then. Before you put the cove back on spreay a lil WD40 or similar on the rubber grommets :happy2:

It can really help to run the engine for a short time to warm up the rubber gromits, makes them much more flexible, and easier to pull off.  :happy2:

well guys i struggled for half an hour last night managed to shift the r/h side no go on the other side, gonna price up a new cover before i try again. or do i take to vw dealer and ask them to fit new air filter and if they break it!

New engine covers are seriously expensive from VW, as Thor said if you try once the engine is warm this will help. I cracked and split an engine cover trying to remove it from a cold engine, I managed to get a secondhand one for £50. You have just gotta be  bit brave and give it a good tug and it should pop off. :happy2:

got the damn thing off at last no damage, thanks stealthwolf for threads and the others who replied, back on with plenty of lubricant

Grab it hard and give it a firm yank. Lube helps.
