Title: Single DIN Adaptor
Post by: jsklair on May 26, 2010, 04:24:58 pm
This was question was originally in the "Intro" section, but it's much more applicable here:

I want to get full iPod functionality; and as one of the standard HUs buttons doesn't work, I was thinking about replacing it with a single DIN aftermarket one.  Specifically: http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-cda-117ri.html (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-cda-117ri.html)

What are the best single DIN facia adaptors out there, and how good do they look in the dash?

And is it a fairly easy job to DIY?

Cheers.

I believe VW will do a single DIN kit.
Some of the aftermarket ones are a bit low rent so avoid at all costs.

I thought the ipod kits did allow full control as they just put it in place of the CD changer.

If you are going single din then VW dealers do one that is a good match for the dash.

The old style ipod adapter only behaves as a multi-changer, not a full ipod control, for that you need the MDI unit either in the glove box or center arm-rest, and a third generation head-unit (at least I dont think it works with the second Gen) and if replacing a 6 CD or old ipod controller, you need new wiring from head unit to arm rest.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.  :happy2:

Does anybody know the part number for the single DIN adaptor from VW?  And how much it should cost?

Also, I'm not too sure what generation my HU is.  My car's a 55 plate, and the HU looks like this: (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.golfgtiguides.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fposts%2Fremoval-mk5-golf-radio%2Fradio_screw.png&hash=09346a7065fcf054136ca161f69183d32d6b00e9)

BTW, in finding that photo, I also found a guide on how to remove the head unit: http://golfgtiguides.co.uk/guides/removal-mk5-golf-radio/ (http://golfgtiguides.co.uk/guides/removal-mk5-golf-radio/)

Think thats an RCD300 which is second generation, not sure about the rest, but that guide shows the correct method for removal.

Just my opinion but if you dont want to have a gap in your dash might look better with a double din after market solution dont think they will cost significantly more but might give a better over all look?
